Is there anybody here who is fond of stage plays? Not the musical though. I was once invited to a stage play presentation with a slightly popular actress in the lead role. The story is an adaptation of an old movie about the hardships of newcomers in the city of Manila. At first, I was really amused since it was my first experience. But as the play goes on, it drags and I feel like leaving. Maybe I'm not that appreciative because my orientation is the movies and tv. In fairness to the play, the story was interpreted in full and the actors are good considering that it is a live performance. But if you would give me a ticket for another play, hmm, I'll take a rain check.
Other than high school stuff, I never have. I participated in community theater during my 11th and 12th grade years but have never attended a live performance.
My husband is in the entertainment industry. He was telling me about a play that he had watched where the director is a famous movie director. His question is this - why was there no props used? The director, when asked replied, it is up to the imagination of the audience. Imagine a scene in the morning where a couple is taking breakfast. The wife is holding an invisible cup and sipping an invisible coffe while the husband is eating an invisible dish with invisible spoon. All props were invisible and it greatly diminished the production value of that play.
Personally, I have not been to a play since I was in school that I can remember. Those were usually fun to watch, as much because we all knew the actors, and lauged at their acting, as it was just to watch the play itself. The only ones that I have even been in were the usual kid's plays, like Thanksgiving and Christmas pagents. Oh, yeah, there was one when I was a teenager that we put on for the church. I do not remember anything else about what the play was about; but it was a whole lot of fun ! I was "Queen Oompah from Moo" (I think it was an Alley Oop play). I was dressed in one of those old-fasioned brown gunneysacks. It itched, but that was okay, because I was supposed to have fleas and scratch all of the time anyway. I had long hair, which my mom put into a kind of ponytail right on top of my head, and added one of those huge fake dog-bones on the top of that. My hair went every which way, since the ponytail was right on top. Did I add, bare feet ... Are you getting the picture yet ? If you are sitting there chuckling to yourself , then you have a pretty good idea of how I looked.
I watched a movie like that (or should I say I started to watch it), and found it to be irritating. If I want to be entertained, I'll watch a movie or other production. I've spent enough time in school, and if I pay to be entertained, it shouldn't feel like work. I do enjoy plays. I haven't been to one in a while, but used to attend frequently. I do enjoy a few musicals, such as West Side Story, ones that have a real plot, good music and dancing, and talented actors. It doesn't matter to me whether it's a professional production or community theater, I find them all entertaining, and would rather not pay full price actually.
I find musical an entirely different show from an ordinary stage play. To me, the attraction of the musical are the songs. My favorite of all time is Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock opera. I bought an album of that in vynil when I was young and then there was that cassette tape and lately the CD and now the DVD. The lyrics of the JCSS rock opera still gets to me when I listen to it during Holy Week. But I haven't gone to a musical play shown live on the stage.

Yes, they are totally different experiences, but I tend to lump them together, since they're live performances. I've seen both the professional and non-professional versions of Steel Magnolias, and loved them both. Brigadoon was wonderful, too, that was put on by the BC (Boston College) Players.
It was! There are several community theater groups here in the area, but no one I know here cares for plays or musicals, and that's not the sort of thing I tend to do alone. I will do a lot of things alone, including going to the movies, but not attend plays or other stage performances. I used to live right down the street from Theater Under The Stars (TUTS) up in Houston, and back then they were a smaller organization, and probably less expensive. I saw a lot of their productions over the years, and was never disappointed.
