I have a friend that is helping me make my apartment a home. I love her place, and she said she would help me, and we have started just by going to Home Depot and picking out colors. Well, I picked them out, she says first and foremost, I have to make the choices for it to be "me" as she puts it. I have a lot of samples, but also found some things online I'll share here.

My plan is to get the colors together I love, and feel comfy with, drawn to etc., then each month I will get something that matches up with my scheme. In my life, I have never done this, it's time:) Maybe I won't want to move away if I finally have a place I am not ashamed to bring guests into. Maybe when I walk through the door and truly love how it feels, smells and looks, I won't "just" be coming here to get away from the world. I'll be enjoying my surrounding when I get here;)

Here are some colors I'm drawn to, I can go brighter or lighter, I am not finalized on anything color-wise yet;)

You can pain walls then? I've actually never had anything but the white walls. Your colors are nice. I'm not into purple much myself. I like blue as a calming color. I've bought some prints and need to get them matted and framed.

    Have fun with your decorating.

    It is a 'personal' choice
I like the wallpaper in the picture with the sofa, but would only have one wall in that
I like neutral colours so that accessories stand out, such as red, black, white and my favourite 'green' :D

It's true that color choice is a very personal thing Denise so if it's going to be your home, it should be done in colors that make you feel "warm and cosy" when you see them.

The place we live should be a home to us and I am happy to hear you are going to make you a Home Denise. Just adding colors you love goes a long way in making a place feel homey. A lot of people who aren't used to bolder colors will just do an accent wall in the bold color and lighter shades of that color or neutrals on the other walls. The great thing about paint is there's plenty of it, so if you change your mind and aren't happy with the color...you can always redo it.

I think you will have fun "shopping" for things that "say" you when you find them. There are so many ways you can fix up a place without having to spend alot of money...garage sales, flea markets, etc. and even just refurbishing stuff you already have. I look forward to you sharing pictures of the home you create for yourself Denise. Enjoy and go for it! :)

I also like neutral because although all those bright colors are pretty, Denise...it's something you can tire of quickly.

It's easier to switch out just accent pieces and cheaper.

But if you don't think you'll tire too soon than do it...I like all the color choices, all interesting.

It is what color you think you can live with the longest. After a friends divorce, she repainted her kitchen a bright lavender. It would have made me crazy. But for her, the color made her feel happy. There is no right or wrong to decorating your space as long as you like it.

One time I saw an all pink and white kitchen that was just beautiful....I'm not sure how my friend's husband felt about that kitchen but having the kitchen exactly like she wanted it inspired my friend to become a very talented cook whose food was always delicious. And that made her husband very happy indeed. :)

    Thanks kitty,

yes, everyone has their faves. I love the unique designs/colors others have in their places, and I am learning that a home can reflect who I am. If my place now reflected who I am, it would say depressed, and don't spend much time here, LOL!!

No, I can't paint my walls, it's a rental, so I want some color, but just enough. I think it's hard to do something like this all at once, and really feel lucky I can't. A little at a time, and I may find new ideas along the way that I otherwise would have rushed into;)

These are only about color for me Patsy, and I can't have anything but white walls here. So I am trying to glance at photos, or samples of colors like I get at home depot, and see what attracts me most;) Then as I go, I will try and match things I buy with those colors;) It will be an ongoing project.

That's what the whole thing is about, finding what I like, yes, but also, what I can live with, and feel cozy with. Exactly, I don't want anything I will tire of but I do need colors, not a bunch but schemes that feel good when I walk into my home.

I agree Beth, I like my white walls, but I need color, so as I mentioned, I'll have to take it slow which is a good thing for me;)

Love that story Babs, that's what I'm learning from my friend Tanya. She is 75, and does a lot of furniture, paintings, and has a gorgeous collection of orchids. She is just good at interior decorating. One thing I will have to have eventually is lighting that I love. Lampshades that reach out and grab me, and I loves some of the pole-lamps they have nowadays:) I mean much of Tanya's furniture is second-hand, which some of my pieces will be as well. I should just take a few pictures of her taste, because I think we are similar in what we love;)

@Denise Happyfeet - It is an exciting time and a little exhausting too, we have just been through it and are now settled :)
We bought a print that pulled all the accessories together as it had each colour in it - looks FAB !
    (Our walls are neutral)
Good wishes with it all x

@Denise Happyfeet I can remember a time when I couldn't paint the apartment walls we lived in either. So what I did was find some fabric that I really loved and stapled it on one wall...like wallpaper. If you do it right it looks good..and you can use a solid color or a print. You can't use a real light weight fabric as this won't hang right but if you get the right weight fabric it works really well.

it has been fun just looking for my colors Patsy:) I've always been an "earth-tone" person, especially in clothing. Then I got a little more daring when a friend told me I would look good in more color;) I realize now how my colors can even effect my mood, so, the decision to work on my place instead of planning a campout, lol;) I have all I need now, but I decided it's "ok" to have some things I want. I admire others homes, but never in my life really put much into "designing" something that is "me".

I think my friend Tanya is pretty intuitive, and she came up to take a look at what I have now. We sat down and had our coffee together at my table and yacked. I told her I just didn't have much of a connection with this place, it was just a roof-over-my-head kind of thing. She said "this is not you Denise". I looked at her and said it isn't?? And I felt a lot of happiness about that because that's what's missing here. Really discovering my tastes, and implementing the things/colors I already know I love.

Hope this makes sense, lol;) It is sooo much fun, just sort of "waking up" about the possibilities;) Thanks Patsy, and I am sure your place looks wonderful!! Any chance of some photos?? Would love to see your work;) Denise
