ok so I got this little windows icon in my systray now. offering me an upgrade to 10 .What I have read elsewhere and from Microsoft is that if you are running a legal copy of Win 7 or 8 or 8.1 it is a free upgrade to Win 10 and you have a year to install it - no other strings attached. long as its an opt. I have 7 and it works just fine and im gonna keep it. I bought a used back up PC with 8.1 and it runs like crap. really slow. so i may try 10 on that one. I think maybe MS is offering a way out of these 8 versions myself. most people don't like em IMO. link anyone gonna have a go at it?? released on July 29, 2015
aagghh ! ! I hate to even THINK about having to do that and learn a new system again, Gary. However, I read through the link that you posted, and since it makes sense to have Windows download it a bit at a time, then I should go ahead and do that rather than having to to it all at once and spending a lot of time downloading it. I am SO spoiled with the ease and convenience of my iPad that I try to avoid using that Dell XPS-18 as much as possible, even though it is actually an awesome computer, as computers go. I have hated learning to use the Windows 8; but probably since I have mostly figured it out, I should be able to adapt to the new Win 10 as well.
I don't have time to read through the info at that link now as it's past midnight, but I'll have a look in the daytime. It's something to think about though I always worry about compatibility of software when I need to do an upgrade. I'd hate to install Windows 10 free of charge and then find I have to spend money on new programs just to keep doing what's working fine right now.
I do not like these newer programs maybe and am getting to old when I got into computers for the second time is was a 386 and windows came on 4x4 in. floppy discs and we ran dos 5 and everything worked great if you made a mistake it would say bad command or file name and you tried again. Now you get ---- you have made a fatal error and we will shot you down. Probably windows 10 will call the police on you if you make a mistake. More advances the lest control you have
Slow running might be caused by either the fact of having bought a used PC that might be below the demanding Windows 8.1 requirements, or might be the other fact; using Windows 8.1 which was allegedly reported in forums to have many bugs and system problems. I bought a laptop about a year and a half ago, and it came with Windows 8, which runs damn fast and without the nuisance XP had, you know, it used to take ages before XP would start after turning the computer on, and hence the reason I remained loyal Windows 98SE user for over ten years before having no other option than shift to XP. With Windows 8 running like the breeze and being of my liking, I have ignored the invitation to upgrade to 8.1 first and then the invite for Windows 10 testing. Experience have taught me that Microsoft products are buggy in Beta testing stages, even might be with the first release. One good example is what I have already said; Windows 98 had bugs and therefore Microsoft had to release the 98SE (Second Edition) version. With Windows 8 seems was the inverse situation with 8 being the good one and 8.1 the defective version However, and back on topic, I won't try Windows 10 unless I have to if any of these scenarios come up: 1. That I manage to test it in a second computer which data loss doesn't care to me (Microsoft buggy releases may cause this) 2, That I have to buy another computer coming with Windows 10 pre-installed as happened with Windows 8. I swore to myself never upgrade to Windows 8, and spent time writing hate articles to "raise awareness" on how bad this operating system was going to be. Who would said then I would fall in love with it, LOL
Surely, this is a high tech topic that I am hesitant to join. My office computer is running on Windows 7 so that leaves me a few steps behind with that Windows 10. We already have installers for test copies but we still have to use it, so busy with work lately.
Ever since Microsoft first hosted the conference in which it presented Windows 10, I've been a beta tester for it. I'd really advise everyone here to accept the free upgrade. Windows 10 combines the best of both Windows 7 and 8, and that means that it's easy to use for anyone coming from either operating systems. Given the fact that it's a free upgrade, I'd say that this offer is a no-brainer.
I'm always happy to try something new if it doesn't cost me anything. My only doubt is whether I'll have problems with program compatibility. Have you experienced this?
We have two laptops that are a year old. One is Win 8.1 and the other Win 7, with Classic Shell. As I understand it Classic Shell is not compatible with Win 10. I plan to change both to Win 10. It will be good to have them both up to date. We can adjust...or fall back.
I bet that within a month, people online will find a way to enable Classic Shell on Windows 10, so that shouldn't be a major worry. I'm really excited for Windows 10 because I was a huge 8.1 enthusiast who only hated the Metro menu. This upgrade means no more Metro, so I'm happy! (and I bet that I'm not the only one)
It's been a while since I've used Windows as my main computer but when I was using Windows, it seemed that a computer was good for about two upgrades of the OS and then any additional upgrades of Windows would slow things down rather than make the computer more efficient. As long as I stayed on an old version of Windows, the PC would run fine but an upgrade would require either a new computer or hardware upgrades. Is that still a problem? I've been using a Mac since 2008 and every upgrade of the Mac OS either improves performance or adds features without slowing the performance of the computer.
I'm in. I have a 5 year old computer right now and it's really getting on my nerves because it's so slow. I never wanted Windows 8 because of all the bad reviews. I don't want a Chrome and I can't justify the price of Apple (not to mention I'm mad at Tim Cook right now), so that leaves me with Windows 10 when it comes out. I do think they did a better job with it than 8, at least that's the reports I'm hearing. But it better not be bloated and a slow runner!
It took me awhile to go from Windows XP to Windows 7. I only did that because Windows XP was becomng obsolette and I was starting to have trouble with OS because of that reason. I don't change Windows programs when the newest one comes along. Windows XP at one time was the most user friendly and stayed that way till Windows 7 came along. I will wait till the next windows program that is user friendly knocks Windows 7 off that pedestal before I consider changing.
