I think these pretty much sum up what most of us are feeling. If only there was a way to get congress to see it, maybe we'd get some real "Change", instead of the rhetoric.

I would actually like to see something like the second one - with the option of voting, "none of the above", and if it got the majority vote, you throw the two candidates out and get two more. Of course, doing this would probably take years to get a new president.

Not everyone on food stamps isn't working. No this is a misconception brought about by some to make the poor look like they are lazy people. Truth be told there are those who make little at the jobs they have become some employers barely want to give minimum wage to them and some can only find part time work. So in order to get by to support their kids they go on food stamps. I am sorry but this is a touchy subject for me, while growing up my parents went on food stams becasue my father was disbled on disability and my mother had a part time job as a crossing guard, so they had to do what they needed to in order to get by. I know there are others out there now who are pretty much in the same boat. So, I tend not to judge people who need to go on this program or even welfare for that matter, we never know when it could be us having no choice but to do so.

I realize welfare is necessary to help those in need. I have no problem with that. I was pointing out the fact that our government is always talking about social security running out of money. That is money we have all worked and paid for.

The same government never mentions running out of money for welfare programs. In fact they encourage more people to sign up. Welfare is not earned like social security. It is a gift, paid for by the same people who paid for social security.

If the government would quit using Social Security as their own personal bank account, they wouldn't have to keep talking about it running out of money. Good post, Sheldon. :)

As an adult, I've had to use food stamps. I'm not proud of it, but I'm not going to hang my head in shame. My kids eating is more important than my pride.

Government leadership and governance isn't as it used to be. Politics, power-hunger, money have gotten in the way of looking after US human citizens for their defense and security. Courage, love and freedom "wax" old and forgotten. That kind of freedom-for-all and the right to life our wise ancient sages and fighters of that ultimate right for their future generation of their beloved land, America!

Saying, "May God bless America" isn't politically correct and safe anymore! Christian love is being frowned at as being "divisive" (the evil Left will always imagine things to promote their agenda). But, as people and as individuals let's hold on to that truth. Let's reconcile with peace and truth. Each of us can make a difference to make better changes by beginning in our own hometowns, communities and later, abroad. Giving hope, somehow, to whom we have in contact with.

I'm sorry for this sad note.

That would have been poetic, intense, and insightful had you not thrown in the piece about the evil left. I was actually really into it before that. Now, here I am responding to what BS you said about liberals, and I don't even know what else you wrote. Tsk tsk tsk...

No one has said you can't yell "God bless America" From the highest mountain top to the deepest valleys! you can say it non stop for 50 years and no one will ever tell you that you arent allowd. What was said is you cannot force everyone else to say it.

I bet if we had a contest to see who can back up their statements with the most facts ( and I don't mean Fox News. I'm referring to facts that have a basis in the real world), I would win. If you want to try it, let me know.

Not having the right to force someone to pray to your god, or learn about the bible in our public schools, or accept that this nation that was founded by our forefathers to be a Christian nation rather than to cherish and nurture diversity, individualality, and the freedoms to worship whoever we want IS NOT THE SAME AS DENYING YOU YOUR RELIGOUS FREEDOM.

The fact is that this country really is full people who want to let it go to hell in a hand basket. They are adulterers, crooks, liars, hypocrites, greedy, proud, and they are responsible for the moral fabric that makes up our society being in shreds... Just like the American flag these people choose to wipe their arses with. And, (excuse me if this word is too dirty to post in this forum), they are republicans.

Republicans and independent conservatives are the ones trying to bring this country back to the way it was meant to be from the beginning. Calling us names as you did does not belong on this forum. It's sad that you have nothing useful to contribute.

I hadn't involved myself in this thread because those involving politics and religion tend to be time consuming and I have been behind on things for too long now. Nevertheless, I'll jump in here. Please keep in mind that when I post under this account, I am simply another forum member, entitled to an opinion like anyone else.

True, but unfortunately, far too many of them do take advantage of a system that was presumably set up to provide a safety net for those who truly need it. In recent years, this has been encouraged by a bloated government looking for reasons to become even larger, and to have even more involvement in people's lives, even so far as to invite people from other companies to come avail themselves of other people's money.

Given all the money that our government wastes overseas, funding both sides in countless wars, blowing things up and rebuilding them, working against our nation's interests with money we don't have, I don't concern myself so much with money that is wasted on American citizens, but I do recognize it as a fact.

That is a very good point. Social Security was intended to serve as a forced retirement program, acknowledging that far too many people (myself included) do not adequately prepare for the time when they may no longer have an income, and a decreasing sense of responsibility on the part of children to take care of their parents in their old age.

I am not arguing in favor of the Social Security program. Given the chance, I would have voted against it. But it's here, and those of us who have worked throughout our lives have contributed our parts to the Social Security fund. Some will collect more than they paid into it, but others die before collecting any of it. Although we may not have done so voluntarily, it is at least a program that we have paid into.

There is no reason to think that it would not have remained solvent had the Social Security program been left to itself. Instead, irresponsible members of Congress decided to hand Social Security funds out to people who have never paid into it, even those who are not working because they chose to become drug addicts instead, and to illegal aliens who may or may not have paid a cent into the system, and who almost certainly never paid enough to repay even the first check that they receive from it.

Social Security funds were used to pay for people with disabilities, regardless of whether they have ever worked a day in their lives, or paid one cent into the system. Sure, these people may be in need of help, but that should have come from other sources than Social Security.

Our politicians also used Social Security funds to pay for any number of other programs and projects that they were unable to fund legitimately.

Yet each election year we hear about how many years we have before the Social Security fund will become insolvent, and they keep pushing the insolvency years forward to suit the purposes of their campaign. Both Democrats and Republicans can be depended upon to use Social Security insolvency as a part of their campaigns, each blaming the other. In that, they are right. Both Republicans and Democrats are responsible, but it doesn't necessarily follow that the answer is to reelect Republicans and Democrats.

Rather than telling us the truth, that there is no Social Security fund, and admitting that it has been used as part of the general fund, they use it as a scare tactic and a campaign gimmick.

It is also true that we don't hear about the welfare system becoming insolvent.

As they do with welfare, they can simply print up more money that is backed by nothing but a smile and a promise, and hope the crash comes while someone else is in charge.

We tend to think of Social Security as being something that we have paid into, and as being our money, while we think of welfare as being someone else's money. However, those who have worked and paid taxes have paid into whatever it is that we think we're getting welfare money from. Whether we like the welfare system or not, we have it, and every working person has paid into it, so it is there when we need it. That's what it's there for.

That is not the same thing as those who have no intention of working or paying into it, yet far too many people are able to live their entire lives off of someone else's money.

Whatever side we are on, in something that we have a strong feeling about, we tend to view those on the other side as evil. There is evil in the world, but I don't know that we can all agree on who these people may be. Where there are two sides, each may view their side as wearing the white hat while the other side is assigned the black hat.

Did Hitler consider himself to be evil? Do Islamic terrorists view themselves as evil? I don't think so. There are people who are okay with being evil, but I don't think that most people can look in the mirror and see the face of evil.

While fact and fiction does exist, I don't know that any of us can tell the difference. I say this not because I think we're too stupid to know a lie when we hear it, but because we have been lied to so often, on so many fronts, for so long that it's impossible for anyone to say that they really know what's going on.

Our government lies to us more often than it tells the truth, and this is true regardless of which political party is in power. Our media has given up being inquisitive. Rather than investigating anything, they simply repeat the press releases that they receive each day. To the media, an objective report involves putting someone on from the Republican side and someone on from the Democratic side, ignoring the obvious fact that both of them are lying to us.

Most people recognize the fact that they cannot trust the media to tell the truth, yet these same people are unwilling to believe something until it is reported in the mainstream media.

I don't believe there is a dime's worth of difference between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. We choose our political party affiliation as if it were a sports team, rooting for one side or the other, and the media keeps the vitriol going so that we all keep believing that we are participating in the governmental process. The closer the parties come to one another, the more anger that the media tries to stir up between the fans of the two political parties. They need us to keep believing that we have a choice because once we quit believing that, we can no longer pretend that we still live in a democratic republic.

Nothing important ever changes when we elect a Democrat, or when we elect a Republican. To be sure, the rhetoric changes, but the direction of our government continues as it was before. Democrats might prefer one path, while Republicans prefer another, but they both lead to the same place, and I don't think it's a place that the American people truly want to go.

The idea is to bring the United States down to the level of a third-world country so that we will be pleased to join a one-world government.

Our current president seems different, but this is only because he is trying to move quicker in the same direction, in order to bring about the destruction of our country during his term, and I think he's doing a pretty good job of it.

I vote because that is what I have always done, and because my vote might mean something at the local level but my vote doesn't matter at the national level.

Very nice, Ken! I feel thoroughly put in my place!! Haha
Seriously, I agree with a lot of what you have said. Even when you pointed out my posts were not completely, 100% on point. I wanted to add a statistic. This statistic was in a book I read a while back, so I have no link and I'm not sure if its still true. At the time the book was printed the prediction was that by the time our children are retiring, there will not be any social security. The program is paying for OUR social security with the next generations' taxes. They are going further and failure her into the red every year. There are just too many of us and not enough of them

Once they began dipping into the Social Security fund to pay for things not related to the retirement of those who were paying into the fund, it ceased to be a dedicated fund. That's my point, that we can't possibly extrapolate any accurate information about how long the Social Security fund may last, since it will last as long as people keep accepting the dollars that are printed. Yes, a future legislature could vote to end it or, given the current precedent that a president can act as king, a future president could decide to end it, and they may well use the excuse that the fund is insolvent, but in reality it is no more or less insolvent than the rest of government. When several people have access to my bank account, I cannot make accurate predictions as to how long it will last me.

I know I haven't been here very long, but this is the most talkative I've seen you.
I am a gun toting Liberal. I know the "gun toting" part is a little sketchy. But I don't pick a party and then start believing what they tell me to. My beliefs were formed years ahead of my having any clue what politics were. Every other belief I had regarding politics happened to side with the liberals. My heart bleeds all the time. But I prefer that to not having a heart at all. That isn't a slight against republicans. It was a slight against certainty republicans who say and believe evil crap. I just wanted to throw that out there.
Social security is very important to me. I don't mean it's important because of what it can do for me. It's a very necessary program. A lot of people are going to be hurting really badly if they lose it. I can't imagine what will happen to the elderly or the disabled once its gone. Being human and having a soul makes me care. We have a homeless population that has gotten so out of hand, and lost so many of the programs that helped them. The social security program is the reason out homeless population hasn't quadrupled.

Then let's hope they keep printing money, but the talk about how long the Social Security fund is going to last is simply a distraction that is brought up on election years. There is no Social Security fund.
