So true... and although many grumble on these boards about the idea of "playing games" .... it is the best diversion that I know of for preserving those brain cells. They serve that exact purpose. We have many good ones to simulate the brain.

I'll take the board games anyday, over pondering about imaginary scenarios about people.
    That does nothing for me.

I guess I've always just had an overactive imagination. I get bored of games rather quickly. Now that doesn't mean I *believe* the conspiracy theories because I don't think I've ever bought a single one of them. Well scratch that... I've wondered about Area 51/Roswell ;) but if I start on THAT, I'll have hijacked Yvonne's thread and that wouldn't be very kind of me.

I guess I'm more like @Yvonne Smith in that I like to play with *what if* mental games. As a child whose parents didn't believe in toys, *what if* was the most fun game we had. Of course back then it was more like *what if* your skin was blue, or *what if* Santa was real?

As a teenager I remember reading a book where the plot would change with the difference of one small change at the beginning of each telling of the story. It fascinated me that just one little change in a plot could make the story totally different.

So for me a conspiracy theory is just an extension of the *what if* game. I think scientist are geared with this type of thinking as well.

I think you're right, @Ina I. Wonder ... "what if" can be fascinating, and keep our gray matter sharp. Sometimes it turns into a bad "what if" and turns our lives upside down, too... like when everything turns into an anxiety and "what if" eats us alive. But that's *definitely* another topic for another day, eh? :)

I agree Mari. There are enough real "what ifs" in life that if I start going down the conspiracy "what ifs" I'll be afraid to step outside.

I've actually been there, @Chrissy Page .. well, it doesn't help that the Bloods & Crips decided they like my town as much as I do... but I convinced myself that they'd either leave me alone or I'd bop 'em with my purse (hey, I have a lot of loose change in there! :) ) so "what if" finally left me. They have no beef with me. I hope.

Then again, "what if" women got the vote, what if we went to the moon, what if we could feed and care for the poor? At one time all of these things were only dreams and theories. There was a lot of conspiring going on with getting the women's right to vote in 1920. Yes, a person can scare themselves with what ifs, but without them many good things would not come about.

I think you're mixing up what a conspiracy theory is, Ina.

One is that we didn't land on the moon.

I think you've been switched, I'll have to think of a question only the real Terry would know. :)

Hi @Chrissy Page , I decided you could be right in that we see the word conspiracy in different ways. So I looked the word up, and it actually tells me that we are both right. I found 5 different meanings.

    1. The act of conspiring.

    2. An evil, unlawful, treacherous, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret but two or more persons; plot.

    3. A combination of persons for a secret, unlawful, or evil purpose.

    4. Law; an agreement by two or more persons to commit a crime, fraud, or other wrongful act.

    5. Any concurrence in action; combination in bringing about a given result.

Examples one and five are how I was seeing the word. Does that make sense?

Yes, but we were talking about conspiracy theories here. That the Beatles were killed and replaced by 4 other men who look like them.
