Constantly exceeding assigned resources. Could be RAM (memory) or CPU ( the central processor). Whatever it is, there's not enough.

The forum was hit by some kind of dns attack before, remember ? I think that Ken thought it originated from china, or somewhere like that.
We have a whole stirred up world right now from the plane crash and the Brussels attacks, and possiblly there are more of the dns attacks occurring right now, and it has nothing to do with us specifically.
There is nothing we can do about that kind of thing, and probably Ken can't do anything either; but it will go away like it did before.
If it is something specific to the forum, Ken will get it fixed, and once he reads the error messages, he will know what to do about it and what is causing it. I would just suggest taking a screenshot any time we get an error message (that has not already been posted), so that Ken can read them and get a handle on things.

I always take a screenshot but usually it's been a minor issue. I also can't PM photos from my ipad In conversations and I didn't think to post it til you mentioned it to me.

I believe it was North Korea last time, or Russia. They seem to do a lot of the attacking. I remember Ken posted a map of where the attacks were originating. I agree, it's nothing related to us per se, but is more aimed at industry, and sites like this one get caught in the middle. It seems to be working now, although my other site is still down.

Yup, but we are apparently still able to write and be posted so I dunno. The Chinese Aliens from Mars have landed in the yogurt.
As long as Ken knows about it, the problem will be handled.
What will happen when our fixer upper Ken is out and about getting some dern surgery done? (Boy, do I know how to ask the right questions or what?)

If this is a dumb airhead question, please ignore it so my face doesn't turn red :) but these attacks... what do they get out of it? Surely not private information, at least here, so... what? Or would the attack, do you mean, be like at a main hub or something, and not just this forum in particular?

@Mari North I honestly don't know the purpose. I think there are probably different reasons for the attacks. My understanding of some is that people will often try to break a system so that they can then present the information to a company in order to receive a reward for identifying a vulnerability, but I'm not sure if the DNS (domain name system) attacks work that way. I'm not all that tech-oriented, but I'm sure Ken or someone else can probably educate us on the subject.

A 508 error is something different than an attack.

Yes a DoS (Denial of service) of some sort seemed to be what happened yesterday.

Hit-and-run DDoS is a type of denial-of-service (DDoS) attack that uses short bursts of high volume attacks in random intervals, spanning a time frame of days or weeks. The purpose of a hit-and-run DDoS is to prevent a user of a service from using that service by bringing down the host server. This type of attack is to be distinguished from a persistent DDoS attack which continues until the attacker stops the attack or the host server is able to defend against it.

A DDoS attack is characterized by an explicit attempt by attackers to prevent legitimate users of a service from using that service. A hit-and-run DDoS is accomplished by using high volume network or application attacks in short bursts. The attacks only last long enough to bring down the server hosting the service, normally 20 to 60 minutes. The attack is then repeated every 12 to 24 hours over a period of days or weeks, causing issues for the company hosting the service.

I posted the Norse attack map, and that shows when these kinds of attacks are happening. Some were targeted at what looked like Maine. There were also some very heavy attacks that hit California; and probably when they hit main arteries of internet servers of the big carriers, ATT, comcast, etc, then it messes up a lot of the smaller things as well.
I am mostly clueless about these tech-y things; but I remember it caused trouble of a similar type before, and was beyond what Ken could fix, and even when he talked with the place that hosts his domain (or however that works) they couldn't stop it either.

I am really sure that this is not something that directly is related to the forum, or any kind of trolls activity.
As far as that is concerned, my opinion is that we should give anyone a chance to participate on the forum, and if it is just a person looking for a friendly place to converse, then that will show, and if not, that will show, too.
Most of us have arrived here as refugees of one sort or another, and if there are more, we should give them a chance.
