We have finally gotten around to working on converting a small spare bedroom into a huge closet for ME!! Woot!! Got the walls patched and painted, a really pretty coco brown (love the color). Next step is pulling up the ancient carpeting and laying down a new hardwood floor. We have never done a floor before, so this is going to be a brand new experience. My house is 50 years old and I already have Red Oak floors throughout, but they are outdated with the real small planking. I'm looking for a newer modern look. Any tips?

    Hi Carol,

We did exactly the same thing a few years ago and converted the smallest bedroom into a walk in closet/ dressing room for me...but I don't have hard wood flooring in there because carpeting keeps it warm and as the room is upstairs it also eliminates noise...but I do like hardwood flooring..and my favourite is the Wide plank, matt lacquer Oak flooring... which if I didn't have Travertino tiling in my kitchen and downstairs hallway..I would choose the oak flooring....

Here's a little look at some choices here...

Very NICE!! I like the wider planks and the lighter colors too..

I would go with carpeting too... for the same reason you did. Unfortunately I have a tiny dog with a tiny bladder that loves carpet too.. and THAT'S a problem.

Where I live in South Texas, Mexican Saltillo tile is very popular for floors. Hot weather and humidity make it ideal.

My whole house is tiled with it, except for two bedrooms. One is the master suite, and the other bedroom was converted into a walk-in closet some years ago. Those two rooms both have off-white carpeting. My dogs are not allowed in either of those rooms.

Are you planning on living there the rest of your life? Think that might affect resale value? I guess it depends where you live in the Midwest. I lived in Chicago, glad I left. Crooked politicians going way back.

I adore dogs as most of you know, they are the love of my life after my daughter and o/h..and sometimes before o/h lol but there's no way I would allow a dog into my dressing room...carpeted or not....

The wide planks do look really nice. I've seen several shows lately where they've ended up refinishing the thinner ones like what you now have. It seems what's been in fashion will always come around again. I don't always like when that happens, but I'd take either the thin or wide plank over most carpeting. I like Travertine, as well, it's very pretty.

Yes we are planning on staying there. I had thought about the resale, but we are not elimininating a bedroom by removing walls, , just adding shelving and storage.. It can be restored to being a bedroom again. In any case, that will be something my sons' will have to deal with as I'll be watching from Heaven.
