My son, who is 25, sent us a text message saying, "Well, I thought this was something you might want to know. I broke my wrist playing soccer. I'm fine." When we called, he very matter of factly told us that he figured breaking his wrist was something he was supposed to tell his parents.

When asked what happened, he said he was playing goalie, and some guy kicked the daylights out of the ball, he caught it (and saved the goal), but it bent his wrist back and broke it. Now, my son played competitive lacrosse (a full contact sport) for 6 years, and never, ever got injured. He was playing co-ed, recreation soccer (in his words, the equivalent of elementary school ball), and he breaks his wrist.

His attitude was such that we just had to laugh - "well, at least you saved the goal." They casted it last night, and he goes to the doctor tomorrow to see if it needs surgery. And of course, it was his left hand and he's left-handed. So, he's learning to be ambidextrous, whether he wants to or not!

I worried the entire time he played lacrosse, but never gave co-ed soccer a second thought. Oh well, I guess you never get to stop worrying about them.

Here's the get well card that I made him.

And on the inside (he's a PhD candidate in philosophy, with an interest in epistemology)

How many philosophers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

    -- Four --
One to ponder the epistemology of the word 'screw’.
    One to question its existence.
One to analyze the moral implications.
One to ask why it matters if we screw in the light bulb or not.

Since none of these requires a working wrist, you should be just fine.

Hope you are all well soon.

Good sense of humor Mal. You might as well have fun with the situation and your son, as you know, worrying doesn't help at all. It seems like he knows that telling you is the best course to take, and going on with his plans isn't hindered. My sons always seem to hurt themselves when they became over confident or too relaxed.

I thought your card had flare.

My brother used to always tell me, "Life is too serious to be taken seriously." I knew that if he was able to call and talk to me in his usual dry, ironic way, that he was OK. And we always like to snipe at each other - we love poking fun and teasing each other - that's the way we show love. My brother also used to say, "It's too much effort to tease someone you don't care about".

I'm hoping he will enjoy the card and know that I put effort into making it for him, and that he gets a laugh at the joke. His first year as a philosophy student, I found the perfect birthday card.

I too have a brother and a relationship like that. We even have a riddle to tease others with. After someone has a little difficulty we will give one clue, which is, "We always do it in December so that it is true.".

    The riddle is:
We are sister and brother, born in the same year, to the same mother, but we are not twins.

    As kids it generally worked.

One was born in Jan-Mar, the other nine months later, in Oct-Dec. I would guess the March and December dates, since that was in your clue.

If this is the right answer, I have to say I feel for your poor mother, to have two pregnancies that close together. Her memory must have been really bad, it takes most mothers at least a year to forget how bad labor is and think about having another baby!!

When I see a family that has kids within a year of each other I tend to think what were you thinking when you did that. You poor thing I know you are tired. My youngest grandsons are one year apart born the same month 2 days apart. My daughter had her hands full when they were younger, they had the chicken pox at the same time, lots of fun.

My poor mother-in-law had 4 boys within 5 years. I couldn't imagine what that must have been like. And they lived in a house with only 1 bathroom!!

The stories they tell are humorous now, when they're adults, but I can imagine that she didn't find them funny at the time. Like the time one of them got a bb gun for his birthday. She was bending over in the garden pulling weeds. She said she heard something buzz past her ear a couple of times, and thought it was a bug. Then she felt a sharp sting on her bottom, and heard one of the boys say, "I guess it will shoot that far!"

Another time, the boys went hunting for little frogs. They came inside with a big mason jar full of frogs, and she allowed them to put it on their bedside table. She said all night she heard the frogs go "ping - splash" as they jumped trying to get out of the jar, and hit the top. After a while, the noise stopped, she didn't think anything of it until the next morning when she discovered that the top had come off and there were frogs hopping around all over the house!

Oh, I forgot the very first clue. The riddle is more interesting with it. It is, "We are the same age."

He was born Janurary 3, 1951, and I born December 4, 1951. So we are the same age for one month.

I have a niece that right out of the Army, had five children in three years. Two of the pregnancies were of twins. She ran away from home six months after the last birthing. It took me couple of weeks to help her understand just why she felt emotionally dead. After her break with me, and a better understanding of her situation, she went back home with some determination to put a stop to some of her chaotic world.
