Yesterday I had lunch with my middle daughter and then we did some shopping. I'm not much for shopping except when it's necessary so I don't really keep up with the latest fads, etc. One of our stops was at Academy Sports to pick up some sports equipment for two of my grandkids who are getting ready to start playing softball again. While standing in the checkout line waiting for our turn, I checked out what was on the shelves next to me. There on the top shelf was Selfie sticks for your cell phone cameras and some selfie stick accessories to go with the sticks. Now a lot of you probably know what this is but I was totally surprised to see these things and when I said something to my daughter, she said: "Mom, don't you remember that's what alot of our kids got for Christmas and were playing with?" I don't remember that but it was probably because I was sick with pneumonia at that time and really not paying much attention to everything going on around me. It's just amazing what they come out with now days...:)

Think my oldest grandson has one. I know he has a GoPro and I've seen him attach it to that and maybe one for his iphone.

Wife bought me a Selfie Stick for my birthday last year. It connects to my iPhone 6 by Blue-Tooth, but the Stick has to be plugged in/charged before using. I've used it a number of times to take a photo of her and I.

Here are the advantages of using one:

To us, it's better than asking someone to take a photo of us.
It's also a lot easier than trying to hold an iPhone out in front far enough to get the picture wanted (mine extends to 3 feet) and easier than trying to stretch out an arm to push the iPhone button to take a photo. The button, to take a photo with the Stick, is on the handle towards the bottom of the Stick.
Can also take a video with the Stick as well and we've done that.
It can also be better than setting up a tripod, connecting a digital camera to that, going back and forth to the camera/tripod to adjust the lens to get the right picture, setting the Timer on the camera and then hurrying back to get into the picture.
Sometimes I will just use my iPhone to take a "selfie" with my wife, because I don't feel like charging it up.
Some people don't like them, while others do like them............as the old saying goes, "to each their own".

Well I'm happy to hear that the Selfie stick can be useful and not just one of those "faddish" things to waste money on. :)

BTW, the GoPro is a camera that can be attached to a helmet and what young adults use for extreme sports.........like jumping off of skyscrapers, motor-cross, snowboarding or snow skiing, etc.

Don't know about that because there are quite a number of Baby Boomers and older out there that still have/use a VCR and don't want to have anything to do with a Blue-Ray DVD Player or other modern day technology. Some are also still using cassette players to listen to music on old cassettes. None of this applies to wife and I.

It can be used for a lot of things Cody, my grandson uses it when surfing or skim boarding, took great videos under water in Maui. Doesn't always have a helmet on so think he wanted the stick for when he uses it for other things.

My Honey and I would be two of those who still love their VCR and Cassette player. We have a combination VCR and DVD player and a combination radio, CD, and cassette player and they are used all the time! I don't consider those things fads. Fads to me are what my grandkids have to have one day and a week later they are no longer in style...or whatever they call it now days. Even words are that way with the young...and I don't even try to keep up with all those changes anymore. Last year I showed up for a Family get together and my daughters told me I was "swagging"...I thought they were insulting me...until they told me that it was a compliment that meant I was dressed totally in style! :) I am open to some modern technology but feel if something is already serving the purpose just fine I'm not going to update it until what I have wears out or breaks down.

Ha ha, Babs....funny you mention swag. A couple years ago I was talking with my grandson and daughter and swag was mentioned. My daughter didn't know what it was but I did. My grandson was impressed but then they think I'm a lot cooler than their mom. :)

In fact the 17 yr old always tells his mom ...why can't you be like grandma.:)

I love it, cause I know my daughter has to be the parent that I had to be but as grandma I can be as cool as I want. :)

Yeah Chrissy, it's really funny how things work out that way...my children's friends used to think that I was a really cool Mom while I was just a Mom to them. With my grandchildren I am just as much a second Mom to them as their Granny and I don't really know how to be cool....when they say I have done something cool it is usually by accident! ;) But they all know they are loved and that is enough for me.

Actually, there are more than one type of GoPro's. A GoPro Underwater is waterproof, whereas the regular GoPro is not. It's like the disposable camera's that Wal Mart, Target, etc. sell. They have the regular disposable camera and they also have the disposable Water Camera. The Water Camera is the one we've bought and used at a Water Park. The camera itself is in a plastic case, so water won't get at it/in it. From the GoPro website, the camera that attaches to a helmet isn't under-the-water waterproof, but can sustain snow skiing.

Selfie sticks have been around for a few years now and are now so common, that they are being banned in lots of art galleries and museums around the world, and even on some archaeological sites we came across when travelling recently.

Actually, I transferred all of our VHS tapes onto DVD's. My MIL gave us her VCR Recorder/Player and we already had a DVD Player/Recorder, so I hooked up the VCR to the DVD Player/Recorder, put in one of our old VHS tapes and transferred/recorded it onto the DVD Player/Recorder. We use to have a video camera that recorded onto a video cassette and then we'd transfer/record the video cassette onto that old VHS Recorder/Player. Yes, years ago, I done quite a bit of "transferring", but got it all done. Now we can play all of our DVD's on our Blu-Ray DVD Player.
Funny, when we bought our first boat in 2005, it had a cassette player on it and we had it removed and a Radio/CD Player installed. After we sold that boat, bought a different one and that had a cassette player on it to.........done the same thing......took out the cassette and put in a Radio/CD Player. My wife has a few cassettes, so we bought a CD/Cassette Player for her.

Talking about "fads", what about all the abbreviations that today's kids use in Texting? We don't Text.
