"Went to work at Walmart, because I got so bored at home". We've been told this by more than one Senior retiree working at Walmart.

My haircutter told me yesterday that she's seriously thinking about retiring. She's around 73 and the only one working in this Fantastic Sams that is that old. The other ladies are young enough to be her granddaughters. And, after watching a few other haircutters use the electronic cash register, she is very, very slow at using it. I asked her twice to tapper the back of my head/neck and, when I got home, I found out that it still wasn't done.
Anyway, this thread isn't about her work, it's about her telling me "I'll probably get bored at home if I retire".

I guess there are those retired Seniors that can keep themselves busy at home, like myself, and those that can't or don't want to. There are plenty of Senior that will say "sure glad I'm out of the workforce. Don't have to take anymore of that political office "bull****" anymore".

    Your thoughts?

It can work either way. I had no intention of full retirement, but after my last part time job, and the BS she put me thru.. I told my husband- I am done! We can lose our sense of purpose after retirement. Kids are grown and gone, grand kids have kids of their own -life slows down. Then prices go up, things like pandemic hit, plus you cant do the things you use to-like you did before.
Since I am on the Well list now, I want to go and do and see. But my hubby has become a TV/video fantatic and watches way too much. He has lost his sense of purpose. He is a wood worker , and price of wood is very high now. The weather will be hot soon, and that will keep him out of garage. Bottom line Cody, it is whatever floats your boat for the time being,

I retired at 60 and never looked back. I can remember people telling me that if I got bored I could get a job at Walmart or whatever. My thought was why on earth would I walk away from a career that paid very well to work at Walmart...???? Anyway, I have never regretted retiring early; we got to travel and do a lot of things while still young enough to enjoy it.

I've felt the same way (except I got thrown into retirement via layoff.) But I can't see working retail to relieve boredom.

    All
jobs have B.S. I would really resent taking grief while only making a fraction of what I could get paid taking someone else's crap. What would the point be?

I know a lot of the folks who work at my Walmart. They're not working for something to do. They're working because they have to.

As long as we are alive God has a purpose for us. Retirement is just another phase of that purpose.

I'm certainly not "above" working at Walmart; I've always done what I had to do to take care of business. :D But I certainly wouldn't have left a corporate job to stand on my feet all day and stock shelves.

Remind me to tell you of the time I cleaned out rental property in between tenants as I was trying to find a "real" job.
There's a side of humanity you really don't want to see.

I retired at 60 and had a very active life with lots of travel and adventures until moving into Assisted Living and starting a new phase of life.

When I was retired via layoff I thought it was great. After about e6 months my wife,,reacting to my scaring the. Beejeesus out if her every time I walked into wherever she was said 'do you think you could find a part-time job for 4 hours a day's. I said sure and found a job at a convenience store that I stayed at for 13 years until she said do you think you'd like to stay home now?

I do because I still can do but without the heavy duty commitment that it takes when working for someone else or opening the door on a new business.
Anything that involves having to be at a certain place at a certain time for any length of time, I avoid but I still work.
I do not mind someone’s BS because I know who I am, what I am and how good I am in a commercial kitchen and can give as good or bad as someone gives me but it’s the commitment that is bothersome now and that’s something that I won’t do any longer.

I’m finishing up a cabinet for a convenience store today and cleaned a roof a couple of days ago on one of the rentals and am replacing a strip of facia on a house today.
I have my own projects that I like to do and some things I have to do and some things Yvonne would like me to do and we also try to go to the wellness center every other day; Yvonne to swim and for me to throw around weights.

Basically, I’m retired from having a commercial value but without losing my personal value. I’ve always been busy and that’s how it still is.

Retiring was hard for my cousin this past year so she went back to work .My friend who retired from GM also had a hard time with retirement but her foot was in a cast for 2 years/ So she had no choice.
Lif changes can be rough on us all when nothing fills the void.
