I'm still tripping along learning something new ,My question this time is ....What is the @... Is that tagging ? A member when you like their post ?? What is the difference between tagging and like ?that appears in the post ? Thanks in advance ..Kate .
Kate no, the 'tagging' is not the same as a like..it's just a kind of way of ''quoting''...so if you type in the @ sign then the first few letters of someone's name ie ''@ ka'' (without the quite marks) a pop up box will come up below with their full name, and you click on that and it will highlight their name in red, and then they get a notification at the top of the screen to say someone has 'answered them directly'. I think it's something that is used more on facebook because this is the first forum I've ever seen who uses it...but there may be another reason for it, Ken or Yvonne will know more about it..I'm sure.
I think that's the only reason Holly, as you say it notifies the member they have been mentioned, I prefer to use their name as it seems more personal, but then they may not see what you have posted for some time. so I use it if it seems important for them to know.............not that much I say is important
That's the only reason I use it too Terry...so they get notification that I've replied to them..otherwise like you I prefer just to use their name without the @ stuff!
I do the same as Terry & Holly. I only use it when I want to "Alert" a member so they don't miss my post. It will appear in the upper right Flag Alert. When I am talking about them in my post or answering them, and I don't want them to miss it, then it works well.
There are no rules as to when it can be used. Basically, its purpose is to alert someone to a post. If the post is in a thread that this person is already involved in, they will be alerted that a new post has been added to the thread anyhow, so it is particularly helpful when you want to alert someone to a thread that he or she may not have already been following. If I start or come across a thread that I think that you would be interested in, I might tag you a post, alerting you to the thread.
Since I'm not on Facebook, I had no idea what the @ name was supposed to mean either. Glad I ran across this thread. I've just been writing the person's name .... I'm old-fashioned, along with being technically challenged.
I use it when I want the person to really notice what I said. If I'm replying right under you in a post I just usually just use your name.
I have started using the name in my reply to keep it personal and adding the @name at the end if I want to alert the member or members.
Just thought of another question please ..I enjoy reading posts in the food section on low carb foods ..can I bookmark that page so I don't have to go looking for it each time Thanks in advance
Underneath the reply box Kate, on every thread topic there are 2 boxes..''watch this thread'' and ''receive email notifications of replies to the thread'' to see both of these options...click on the reply box..then 'more options'..before posting your reply and you will see the boxes underneath...(if you just click on ''quick reply'' the 2 options aren't available)...click one or both of those options to keep track of the Carb thread. . If you click the former you can just click on 'watched threads' at the top of the thread to see new replies everytime you log onto the forum ... and clearly if you click the latter you'll receive emails each time there's a new reply..
.... something else. Wonder if anyone else had this problem?? .. or if I'm just slow. When I signed on to this forum, in the beginning, the board always came up in the SeniorsOnly style, and I had a hard time finding posts ... then I figured out I could change the settings in preferences to default style. What a difference it made for me. Am I alone in this? Anyway just thought I would mention it.
That's a very good tip Bonnie...because it makes the forum very easy to read by changing to default style by bringing all the threads under one another...
