I believe my favorite wild animal is the opossum. So far we get along just fine.

They don't get rabies. They are not aggressive. They don't try to get in your house or chew on your porch railings, siding, plastic pipes, or electrical wiring. They don't bother bird feeders. They clean up dead stuff and eat ticks.

They pretend to be mean, but really prefer not to bite, which makes them even cuter (@2:10)

I've never yet seen one with babies. Probably they are more cautious with babies on board.

All things considered, what's not to like?

From the video I posted on the thread about Depression food, I gathered a gun was not necessary for possum hunting. Otherwise how would you keep it for a week before eating it. I read a brief description somewhere, but can't find that now. A picture is worth more than the words and I found two.

I don't remember anyone in my family ever talk about going possum hunting, but they did a lot of squirrel and rabbit hunting. As a child, I remember my father and grandfather going raccoon hunting together once. They left walking from our house after dark, and you could see their flashlights in the distance for quite a while.

I don't think they got any. From the conversation I overheard from my father afterwards, my grandfather didn't take the hunt very seriously. But that's another story.

Hi Bill. .I was present on only that one occasion ...
But they (uncles and grandfather) talked about it briefly several times when I was around, all in past tense, when they were younger. It seemed to be in a rather humorous way, as in "What were we thinking?" ;)

When I used to walk every night, I'd stop at a little park. There was a trash can right next to the bench where I would sit, and one time this half grown possum climbed up into the can right near my shoulder. I started carrying him chicken. He would be waiting for me every night. Then he just disappeared. :(

They really aren't aggressive at all. It's just a defensive reaction to fear and it just looks scary.

I always stopped and let mama possum and her young’uns pass by. or sit on a log and watch them.
I raised two small raccoons whose mama was killed by dogs.

Picture of possum dinner served to President-elect William Howard Taft by the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, January 15, 1909.

A Possum Committee was formed to procure 100 possums for the dinner, which were obtained for free from the plantation of a local judge. .Correspondence is described in detail HERE
