I was sort of excited about the many musicians who were going to be on a few channels, on their New Year's Eve specials. What a big disappointment! Most either lip synced to a full blown version of a tune, or sang live to a taped musical track. The performances lacked any excitement, at all, and some were truly terrible. One rap artist, known for her explicit lyrics tune about a female body part, did the kind of "dancing" that would have gotten her arrested a few decades ago, but such is TV "entertainment" these days, I guess. Having no or very limited audience members definitely cut down on the energy of performances, I'm sure, but things could have been so much better. Every year, I tell myself I'm done watching these NYE specials. Now, I think I may hold to that, this year: I'll cue up a good movie, have a few good music cd's ready to go, dance a few dances with Janet and Max, our dog, open the champagne, eat the black eyed peas and cornbread, at midnight, and go to bed. Oh boy.......

Yeah, I turned on something shortly before midnight to see the ball drop and there was some rather scruffy "boy band" leaping around and lip-synthing (poorly). The lead singer (?) tried to make up for it with a spectacular display of crotch-grabbing. I was getting a mite worried for the lad's family jewels but maybe his codpiece had just slipped and he was trying to adjust.

I watched the music on PBS all evening. Not much.I didn't enjoy it, just nothing else on.
Went to bed at eleven-thirty, read till one a.m. Slept soundly.

We watched movies. After hearing there was to be a "virtual" NYE in Times Square we did a giant eye-roll and looked for a movie to watch.

Most of TV is disappointing to begin with, and flipping a page on a calendar is nothing to get excited about either.

I think the last time I watched a NYE special it was when they propped up a failing Dick Clark.

I've tried to watch others, but I didn't want to end the year having what little sense I've got left being sucked out of my head. I can't recall the last time I bothered tuning in, and I'm always up till at least 1AM.

The only thing I ever want to see is that damned ball drop, and I never think to change the channel until 12:10AM.

    @Trevalius Guyus

Remember when the prior generation was worried about Elvis' gyrating hips, the Stones' "Let's spend the night together," and Morrison's "Light my fire"?

Heh-heh, trust me, Megan Thee Stallion's routines make your above acts seem like five year olds dancing in kindergarten.

WARNING: Some may be highly offended by this video. Pass it by, if you value everyday decency.

FWIW, I find her to be an attractive, talented woman, albeit one who pushes, and goes through, any boundaries of good taste and restraint. Of course, that's exactly why she's currently raking in her mega bucks income.

Pretty much. Not too far removed from those Evening Ladies (and Gentlemen.)
I want to digress into a "rap" diatribe, but I'll resist for now. Rhythmic talking is not music (oops.)

I remember when a younger coworker told me of a female singer named "Garbage." She apparently "goes commando" (no underwear) during her concerts.

    Anything for a buck.

Today's music just isn't for us at all. Wish more country singers looked like George Strait, Garth Brooks or Chris Le Doux. Even Kix Brooks looks better than Ronnie Dunn, both of Brooks & Dunn.

Music for NYE, is for the Millennials of NYC, L.A., Dallas and all of the other big cities in America...........definitely not for Seniors. Then again, a person pretty much has to watch a PBS concert to see groups that Seniors know.

It's not groups that we know, it's music that does not make us depressed over what kids are exposed to.

The prior generation tried to stop the slippery slope. "Let's spend the night together" was highly offensive to them, while these days it's what one stranger says to another at a bar (or even the grocery store)...and the answer is often "Yes." Erica Jong wrote Fear of Flying and introduced "the zipless f*ck" to a public begging to be free of societal constraints, especially women who [often rightly] felt that they carried the full load of morals.

And look at where we are today.

    Back on topic...
    Happy New Year!

I actually like rap, and my band did a few rap hits. It came naturally to me, since I grew up, and paid my dues, on the South Side of Chicago. The high school that I graduated from was about 87% black by the time I hit my Senior Year. I got along with everyone, and learned invaluable lessons in the process.

Don't believe that rap requires no talent. The syncopation is tricky, along with the fact that on some tunes, you need to memorize more lines than some actors speak during a complete act of a Broadway play.

As for me, there was only one black family of kids that went to our consolidated school, which included two townships, and I never once seen them. However, my wife was born in Detroit, but lived in Lincoln Park, Michigan. Lincoln Park was primarily white. There was no blacks in her graduating class, but Motown music was well received.

I was mainly around local farm kids/students in my school years and mid-60's music played at yearly class dances. Didn't even know what Motown music was until I met my wife in 2000 and I ended up completely loving it.

Todays music isn't the classic rock, oldies, Motown and country, that both of us liked from years ago. But, two "rap" type songs that I've listened to, and like is..........Can't Touch This (MC Hammer) and the combo Aerosmith/Run DMC "Walk This Walk".

The only events that I've heard some classic rock at was two Thanksgiving NFL Half-Time Shows where John Fogerty played in 2006.
