I figured since we have a What's for Supper thread, we should have one for desserts, as well. I've been wanting to make this recipe for a long time, but had to wait until I had the honey and almonds. I looked at the whole wheat flour in the store, and although the price wasn't that high, I didn't want to have to buy 5 pounds of it, since I don't plan on using it for anything else. Wheat sometimes bothers my stomach, and whole wheat even more so, so having 5 pounds of this flour on hand would be unnecessary. I asked around on another forum and was told that whole wheat flour probably wasn't absolutely necessary to this cake, so I'm just going to try making it with all purpose white flour and see what happens. Hopefully it'll turn out o.k. For some reason, I love the way it looks, and it sounds delicious to me. King Arthur Flour's Honey Cake Recipe
I hope your honey cake turns out great for you, @Diane Lane ! This is a thread I won't be able to add to very often... having dessert around here is a rarity. Once a while maybe some chocolate thing that I buy but when it comes to cooking and baking desserts, it tends to sabotage my eating plan. Problem is that even when I cut recipes in half, it's too much for such a small family. If I can add my 2 cents about the dessert I'm *thinking* about (no, I did NOT say salivating over!) right now, it would be cheesecake... a really great cheesecake that makes everyone taking a bite groan out loud. I've had some like that, but not very often!
Haha @Mari North , I post lots of recipes online that I don't make. I usually can't afford half of the ingredients, or don't have the energy, and I have a tiny kitchen, so don't let your diet keep you from sharing yummy recipes. Remember, dessert can be sorbet, or some other low calorie creation. I have been eating my homemade ricotta cheese with fruit as dessert lately, and it's delicious and fairly light. I'm hoping to make mascarpone and mozzarella at some point, too .
Diane, the cake looks amazing! Have you been diagnosed with Celiac disease? If so, no gluten for you!
No, I can't afford medical tests, etc., right now. I don't think it's full blown celiac, although it could be. I'm sure at some point I'll get tested for it. So, I made the cake, and it came out amazing. Other than dropping the sifter and making a mess of the powdered sugar, that is . It's not difficult at all, and I used all all-purpose flour, no whole wheat flour, and it came out just fine. Oh, and I used slivered almonds instead of sliced, since that's what I had here. I tried a bit with my coffee and it was great, but I think it would be really special with tea.
Thanks,@Ruby Begonia, it would be a nice cake to make for company, since it's fairly easy, and isn't too rich. Next time I will try to remember to buy sliced almonds, because the presentation would be nicer, but this still tastes amazing .
Sorry you can't afford medical care...benefits.org has benefits like Medicaid for all and it's free for all you need is a Medicaid card you can apply for online too. Here is the page of information about Medicaid. Try to see if you qualify...everyone should have medical coverage. *https://www.medicare.gov/your-medicare-costs/help-paying-costs/medicaid/medicaid.html For dessert...anything that has low or no sugar added. From time to time at Times Supermarket they've got this apple and cherry turnover with no sugar added we love for dessert. Hope you get your medical coverage. Good luck in your baking and you're welcome in advance!
The dessert I would like right now is a slice of warm apple pie with a scope of vanilla ice cream on top. I don't know when I had apple pie last and I stopped eating ice cream a long time ago, it hurts my stomach. But right now I think I would chance it. A strawberry short cake with whipped cream would be good too. I love strawberries fresh or frozen I don't care/
This desserts thread is a good one Diane. We don't eat desserts too often but we sure like them. Keep the recipes coming folks. I have an abundance of sweet potatoes so I searched for recipes and found several. I found this one on a country life forum and I like it. Sweet Potato Pie Ingredients: 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes (one 29-oz. can, drained) 3 eggs, beaten 1 cup evaporated milk 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1/2 cup sugar 1 cup packed brown sugar 1 9 Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, mix ingredients and pour into pie crust. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Allow pie to cool. Top with whipped cream or Reddi Whip. I suggest using a pie ring or foil for the first 30 minutes to keep the crust from getting too brown.
Thanks, Krissttina. I make too much to qualify for Medicaid (or any other 'assistance'), but once I pay my Medicare as well as my other bills, there's nothing left for actual medical care. Many citizens are in the same predicament, despite what the government claims. I like that the honey cake has no sugar added, on top of the honey, that is. I don't need to limit my sugar intake, but don't like to consume any more of it than necessary to sweeten my food and drinks. Thanks, @Sheldon Scott, I love talking about food and recipes. I've collected recipes for years, so have my mom and sister, and we often trade. That recipe looks amazing. I love anything with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger, they're some of my favorite flavorings, especially combined!
Yes, thanks for the recipe for Sweet Potato Pie. I must give it a try. I've heard a lot about them lately. Much of that recipe is in a pumpkin bread that I make (minus the lemon juice and add pumpkin instead of sweet potatoes of course) .. it must be good. ....and anything with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger can't miss!
Pumpkin Bread recipe .. I always double the recipe, double the spices and cut way back on the sugar (half). Ingredients 1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) 4 eggs 1 cup vegetable oil 2/3 cup water 3 cups white sugar 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger Add all ingredients to list Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour three 7x3 inch loaf pans. In a large bowl, mix together pumpkin puree, eggs, oil, water and sugar until well blended. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger. Stir the dry ingredients into the pumpkin mixture until just blended. Pour into the prepared pans. Bake for about 50 minutes in the preheated oven. Loaves are done when toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
I can't bake, maybe because I don't like to bake. My best is a box mix for brownies, then topped with vanilla ice cream and toasted walnuts.
I can't bake either, Ruby! I'm a great cook or used to be anyway but I never liked baking, the best I would come up with was the no bake desserts.
