9 or 10, my classmate Howard was given this stuff daily by his mother. He always appeared rather sickly, so may actually have benefited from it: serious multi-vitamin. Think it contained cod liver oil, for it stank of fish. Palatability for kids was assured by making it very sweet and thick, like honey. Upon his mother's recommendation, I asked my own mother to get me some. Be-Geez! Was that stuff awful! "Mouth-feel" was like fish-laced molasses over-sweetened to hide it's worst attributes. The bottle stood in our pantry for years. Anyone remember it? Frank
We never took vitamins, but lived rurally and ate lots of fresh food. I do remember Castor Oil. You got it twice a year just in case you picked up worms.
My great-grandmother dosed any children who visited with a large spoonful of sulfur and molasses. I'm not sure which was worse, the sulfur or the molasses. Nastyyyyyyyyy….
@Mary Robi Molasses is a wonderful added component, after water, malt, hops, and yeast, in beer-making. Since it contributes sugar, which is fermentable, and nice dark color, I have used it to make my "Bock" beer, but not recently. Frank
I'm sure your Bock beer is wonderful (my father made quite a good Bock), but nothing will change my mind about molasses, with or without sulfur. Blechhhhh.
@Mary Robi True enough, molasses is pretty much not good for anything by itself. I have had some most wonderful cookies as well as other bakery in which a small amount of molasses made for a wonderful flavor! Frank
Yuck the cod liver oil, I had to take for some reason I can't remember....very nasty. Remember taking cod liver oil also to start labor pains. I would just upchuck it.
