Now that a lot of apartment complexes are "dog friendly", at times the complex can sound more like a kennel than anything else. If living in a first story apartment, and single/working adult, lives above, just how much noise will happen if that adult has one child or more living with them? It is stated that any kid under 12, should not be left at home alone. Whether it's at a house or in apartment, young folks outside, talking like it was 2PM, not 2AM.

Actually, we've had both of the above problems, even when we had a house. In an apartment, it hasn't been an upstairs neighbor, because, for the last 10 years, we've lived in a "bungalow"/single story apartment that is attached to the end of the building we live in. But, have had dogs barking problems, both during the day and at night. One resident actually got rid of their dog or they would've had to move.

One odd thing that happened a few times at the house we use to have, two large woods owls, perched on the roof at each end of the house behind us, would wake us up at 2AM with their "hooting". When things are really quiet outside, an owl's "hoot" is very loud. I end it by using a boat spotlight. Turned it on facing straight up in the sky and bring the spot down onto one of the owls. I flew off and the other followed.

So, is there any annoying noises where you live, and, if so, what do you do about it?

We had a neighbor who had a couple of dogs that barked continuously. After the first week, I tuned them out as we had the railroad behind the house. Our other neighbor, across the street, was very annoyed. I think he called the police a couple of times.

The only sounds that bother me are ones that continue on forever.

    1. barking dogs (until their owners get home)
    2. wind chimes (until the wind stops)
    3. leaf blowers (big jobs lasting several hours)

I can shut the sound out at first, but after a couple of hours, it starts to get to me. Don't know why I can't shut it out permanently. [IMG]

What do I do about it? Nothing. Luckily outdoor dogs have not been in fashion here lately. (Thank you!)

When we lived in apartments the worst was noisy neighbors .. next door neighbors with loud booming voices and upstairs neighbors with lead for feet !

Currently we do have a neighbor who has 5 dogs and they all have huge lungs ! They have a doggy door and those dogs fly in and out of their house all day and night and when they do they are barking. They bark at cats, birds, wind, rain, any car that goes up the street ... yep .. constant and the owners act as though they don't hear it.

We live a few blocks from the hospital, police and fire departments and the constant sound of sirens is nothing compared to those dogs !

We had that exact same problem , back when we were living in a trailer park and the trailers were right next to each other. The neighbor’s dogs were out all of the time, and barked constantly, day and night.
Even a loud fan in the bedroom at night didn’t help us to be able to sleep.
Then, we found an anti-barking device on Amazon, and it literally screeched at a loud and high-pitched decibel every time those dogs barked. The dogs soon figured out what was causing it, and they stopped barking almost completely.
The only drawback was that we had to keep our little doggies inside most of the time for a while until all of the neighbor dogs learned to stop barking and activating the screeching device, so it didnt’ hurt their little ears , too.

Well, what really can be done about dogs that like to bark? I remember a young lady resident, who lived on the second floor of the building where our mail box is, who had two small dogs. A Senior couple lived below her. Every time I'd see the husband, he'd complain about how much the dogs barked, even at night. His wife was fighting cancer. They ended up moving out. Anyway, every time that I'd go and get our mail, the dogs would bark inside the apartment. The young lady was at work. She has now moved out as well.

I mean, in an apartment complex, what is management suppose to do about a barking dog, other than to give the owners a notice about the barking? Evict the resident?

My grandmother, late in life, got a little short haired terrier, named Pooch. Every time we visited my grandparents, that dog would bark at us until she had to yell at him to stop, and he lived to be quite old.

This was inside the house, and he had this high-pitched yippy voice. He did this to all the relatives, not just us. I'll never forget that dog.

Where we live, most of the other dogs are not really close, so although it seems like there are usually some dogs barking somewhere, it is not like it is right next to our house, unless it is our own dogs, and we can at least stop their barking.

What we can’t do much about, and usually happens in the wee hours of the night, are the humans making noise of one sort or another. Sometimes it is just blasting their loud music from their car stereo (or walking down the street with a boom-box blasting on their shoulder), or the argument and sometimes fighting that seems to invariably take place right in front of our house, to the crazy person who thinks that 3AM is when he should be out there with his loudest weapon and empty every round in the clip.
We never know if it is that simple, or if it is another gang shootout down at the corner convenience store.

We live just outside of the arsenal gate, so on some days, the arsenal is exploding some sort of munitions, which shakes the whole house, and has us checking the weather forecast to see if an unexpected thunderstorm is upon us.
And the street corner that goes into the arsenal gate is a busy one, so we have police, ambulance and fire trucks going by at all hours of the day and night.
With all this going on, a barking dog just does not seem like such a big thing when it happens.
