When I was a young man, yes, I can still remember, I found that without a degree, there would be little for me to do except menial jobs. This was fine until I decided that living with roommates and driving an old Studebaker that would take two cycles of the steering wheel to make a turn was getting a bit old.

Fortunately, this was prior to the internet and their was no quick way for Personnel to check out references. One fine day, I made a nice resume which was mostly untrue, but since I was such a charming person and had a lot of nerve, I took my resume and presented it to several firms. It was not long before I had a nice paying job and nobody ever questioned my degree.

After some years at a particular place, I had befriended the person who had hired me, and he asked me, "Richard, what exactly is a GMP?" I could not hold back my laughter when I told him, "Great Monopoly Player!" He looked at me, said, "Please, never tell anybody. I want to keep my job!"

Richard, I think that 'a lot of nerve' is an understatement

Hi Von! LOL, yeah, I was pretty daring when I was young. I have had a great and unusual life, and hopefully I will continue in the same mode!

I would have loved to seen the look on his face. I can assume that you never told any one (on the job). The saying "When there's a will...there's a way." is too true in your case.

You must have loved the job to have stayed there for several years. I'm curious though, how did you become friends with the person who hired you?

Yes, he was pretty shocked! I find it easy to make friends and when I was making my mark, I chose my work friends carefully.

I am retired now, eight years, Richard. I worked for a Utility company in the distribution end, for 38 years. The Summer weather was nice, but I am glad to be inside during the Winter...except for snow shoveling of course.;)

I read electric meters for about a year in Ohio. Terrible job no matter what the weather!

I worked with natural gas, and started out reading gas meters. All are read remotely now a days. We recently had our electric meters replaced with "intelligent meters".
