Last year, we had a couple of large light-up candy canes, that go into the ground, get broken at the bottom, due to the heavy-duty leaf blowers the landscape company people use. We have a couple of artificial Poinsettia's, one on each side of our front door, that I had to bring in this morning, because I knew they would blow them over. We have one Christmas door mat, that I use to cover an extension cord for outside lights, that, if they blow at that, it will wind up in another state. IOW, they aren't real careful about outside Christmas or Halloween decor and, if they blow something over, they don't pick it back up.

I've talked to our apartment complex manager and she pretty much just brushed me off saying "they have a job to do and do it the best they can". She likes that some of the residents decorate outside their apartment for either Halloween or Christmas, but...…….

My wife would like to put a string of Christmas lights on some small bushes in front of our apartment, but I don't want the lights to be wrecked. There are large, some very large, oak leaves that fall all over the complex and that's what the landscape company goes after with their large leaf blowers. One of our neighbors put their window Christmas lights up inside their window. Might be an idea.

    What do you think?

Well unfortunately the leaf blowers have to do their job, so I would suggest that your lights stay indoors, maybe around the windows if you want them to be seen by Passers by. As for the poinsettia , it's a shame you can't put them outside your door for fear of damage , because they do look pretty on a doorstep, but if you have a fireplace then maybe put them there, or what about sitting on a table next to a window?

The two poinsettia are artificial. I brought them in the apartment when I seen the landscapers get here. I just put both back outside, one on each side of the door. Today, when it gets a little warmer, I will put out our large candy canes that stick in the ground...…..a row on each side of sidewalk coming up to our apartment. This will be the last year from much of our Christmas décor, inside and out, since we won't know what room we will have, inside and out, for them at our next apartment.

The Christmas door mats have to be outside to cover up the extension cords for the green lighted garland we put around each door and for the candy canes.

It's just that we'd think that these landscapers would be more careful this time of year due to residents decorating outside. Yes, they have a job to do, but they could be more careful blowing.

In the complex where I live the management discourages people from putting anything outside of their apartment in the common areas of the buildings, garage or on the grounds. They also have been known to ask people to take down window decor that makes the complex look a little less than desirable.

One person's idea of a nice holiday decoration can be another person's tacky horror.

I would save myself the money and the grief involved with decorating outside of my apartment.

Well, there are those that don't like Christmas, period. We don't have the rule here. In fact, we've had a Outside Christmas Decorating Contest here before and we came in second. Our management actually encourages it's residents to decorate outside, but no large Christmas balloons.

Here's a photo of our tree in our living room, with red garland/white lights around fireplace. It's 8' tall and artificial. Got it on sale a few years ago. Last Christmas for this.

The year (2012) we won 2nd Place for Christmas Outside Lighting in our apartment complex, this is what the front of our apartment (outside) looked like. Today the deer is gone as well as the bushes on the left. We could put up roof lights, but it's seems to be a lot of work. We still put up the candy canes though.

Actually I'm not a great fan of outdoor Christmas lights everywhere at my own home, but I do like to see others if they're well done and not cheap and tacky , and I have to say Cody, yours look really nice,..I would enjoy them if they were outside a home in my road...

Yea, some families REALLY get carried away with outside Christmas décor. There is actually a contest on tv here where a judge goes to different homes in different states to judge large outdoor Christmas displays.

I also heard, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised about it, that a family can hire a company to fully decorate the inside and outside of their home. Just bring the décor out of the attic or garage and they take care of the rest.
