A "Spoonerism" is an accidental transposing of the initial letters of 2 words, often with humorous results. The term is attributed to an English Reverend named William Archibald Spooner (1844-1930), who during one of his sermons in which he was supposed to say "The Lord is a Loving Shepherd", said "The Lord is a Shoving Leopard". Go to YouTube and check out nightclub comic Jack Ross telling the story of Cinderella using nothing but Spoonerisms! Example: "Cinderella had 2 Sisty Uglers (ugly sisters) who sat around all day Cheating Ocolates and Magging Readazines (eating chocolates and reading magazines) while she did all the Wirty Dork (Dirty work) like Flopping the Moor." (Mopping the floor) There are also lists of some of the great Spoonerisms. Hal
Hey Shirley, Are you laughing at the spoonerisms or are you making fun of the subject that I introduced? Are you saying "We want JOKES, not wordplay"? I hope you're not near the North Carolina Coast! Hal
Well...it looks like my type of humor is not what most of you prefer. You want JOKES and FUNNY STORIES, not Spoonerisms, Puns, Tom Swifties, and other "Play on Words". It seems that I'm a different, esoteric breed of cat, so I'll just bow out of "Make me Laugh". C'est la vie! Hal
Heez Jal, the thread has only been up for a single day and let’s face it, Saturday isn’t the best day on the forum anyway. Give things a tittle lime and you might have a good thing going. ............... I have had a couple of threads go for 3 or 4 days and only gleaned a couple of likes then for whatever reason they took off then.........died.....
@Hal Pollner , I am laughing uproariously at y'all's spoonerisms. I am about 130 miles from the coast, northeast of Raleigh. All safe and sound, now. The Cinderella story reminds me of a story I used to do for the kids as part of my Programs for Kids. I was Boomer the Dog. I had a cute little black nose and I had a tail Velcroed to the back of my pants. My assistant was the straight man who was constantly having to correct my boo-boos. It began; "Once upon a time there were Pree Little Trigs. She looked at me and said, "But Boomer, isn't that supposed to be Three Little Pigs?" Me; "Well, I suppose you are right. Anyhow, they lived in the mouse with their Hother." It went on like that until I would say, "Well, that's the end of my tale" and rush toward the exit. She would grab my tail and it would come off. The kids would be rolling with laughter. So would the adults and I.
Spoonerisms are the unintentional interchange if the initial letters of 2 adjacent words, attributed to British minister Dr. William Archibald Spooner, who during a sermon once said "The Lord is a Shoving Leopard" instead of the intended "The Lord is a Loving Shepherd". You can use Spoonerisms to disguise swear words and other embarassments. For example: "Who shivs a git?" or "Chuck you, Farley!" There's a big list of them online, some accidentally spoken by famous people. Hal
@Hal Pollner You are over 21, you can speak the actual cuss words if you want to......you just can't post them on here.
Hell Bess,Yes...I'm nearly 4 times 21! (See the Spoonerism? I said "Hell Bess,Yes" instead of "Hell Yes, Bess") Hal
