Four of my friends married their high school sweethearts and only one is still married to her. The others divorced. My high school sweet heart became my fiancé and then cheated when I was fighting in Vietnam. Got a Dear John letter like you see in those WWII movies. I used to watch WWII movies a lot since I always wanted to be a soldier. I always felt sorry for the guy in love who got the Dear John letter and was so far away that there was nothing he could do about it.

Some marriage counsellors say that it is not uncommon for high school sweethearts to marry since they dated so long that they felt the next logical step was marriage when it was just that they were used to each other. My highs school sweetheart ended up with a drug addiction, unwanted pregnancy by a random guy, mental illness that still persists, marry a guy just to support her and her son, then divorcing him the day after his last college tuition check cleared to marry a woman. For me, it was heart crushing when it happened but in retrospect it was the best thing that every happened to me in my life. It enabled me to meet my wife of 46 years.

Do you have any high school (or college) sweetheart stories to share?

My son married the girl he dated since ninth grade. He's 54 years old now, and they are still married.

That is great. I am a sucker for love stories since so many of our friends and all of our siblings are divorced.

I have some high school graduation classmates that ended up marrying their high school sweetheart and that sweetheart was in the same class as we all were. All but one is still married and we all graduated in May 1968. All married in early 70's.

I never had a high school sweetheart. Most of us farmers didn't.

During high school I was so attached to my car that my friends predicted I would marry it!

I've never been a ladies' man in all my life and that began at school but vocational school was really the low point. There were just three girls in my class at vocational school. No sweethearts, no interest in me but lots of dating couples around me. Sorry, no stories to share. I asked Rod to express that feeling in a song for me and he did. "Some guys have all the luck." "Seems so unfair when there's love everywhere but there's none for me."

Folks around me at school dated not only class mates but mates from parallel classes and those above and below. Since then we've had several class reunions and it turns out that no one had married someone else from school. Quite a lot were divorced. Yet probably as an after-effect of a class reunion in 2001, two former class mates (aged 46 then) decided to live together as a couple (whether actually married or not I don't know for sure) and have happily done so ever since. The last class reunion was just a year ago.

My uncle and aunt were high school sweethearts. He was the valedictorian and my aunt was a cheerleader (I know, I know  The school was not very big.) They stayed married 65 years, until she died.

Now there's one I never thought about, until you worded it the way you did: is a couple no longer married when one of them succumbs to the inevitable?

Another imponderable? All I meant was, my uncle is still alive. It would be 72 years of marriage now. There is no doubt in anyone's mind who knew them they would still be married if she were alive.

I'm sorry, Nancy! I was just pulling your leg, making light of something I should not have, a tender matter, to be sure. Frank
