NC Many will see a girl looking at her smartphone in this painting for the 1850s The scene bears a striking resemblance to a teenager texting or looking at social media while carelessly walking down the street but was actually painted in around 1850-60. Painted by Austrian artist Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, 'The Expected One' shows a young man waiting on a countryside path holding a pinking flower while a girl approaches with her attention gripped by a small rectangular object in her hands. Looks like she's holding a rosary to me...I'd say she's holding a small book of prayers along with a rosary.

But she's walking and reading. Not looking or paying attention to where she is going. See there is similarities. At least she's not behind the wheel of a ox cart.
