I'm reading my latest copy of Reader's Digest and came across this article in their News From The World of Medicine section. Facebook Users Live Longer A 2016 study found that the average Facebook user is about 12 percent less likely to die in a given year than someone who doesn't use the site---and that people who accepted the most friends requests lived the longest. This doesn't mean you should say sayonara to all your non-virtual friends. According to the study, interacting on Facebook seems to be healthy ony when it is used to maintain real-life relationships. The online activities that correlate with reduced mortality (such as posting photos) also indicate an offline social life. I just have one question. Did our tax dollars fund this study?
Oh No! I'm Doomed... Never had a Facebook account; rely on others to keep me informed on what others are doing.
I have a Facebook account but really don't do much on it anymore. Will look once a day and that's it.
I have an FB account but I only look at it about once a month just checking on my daughter and a few friends... nothing much. I don't like FB or twitter...
It is actually the facebook groups where I spend most of my facebook time. I belong to about 10 different groups, and look through those at least 1-2 times per day, plus scrolling through my friend’s pages to see what they are up to. I have “unfollowed” everyone on facebook, except my kids, because people are always posting so many pictures, jokes, and just spam posts (the “send this to everyone”. Kinds), and that keeps my page uncluttered, and I can just look at other people’s pages as I want to see them.
I use FB pretty much every day. I have got rid of some “friends”, like our Great Niece, for the language they used. We post pictures quite often. Got involved in FB five or so years ago, when a high school classmate made a FB page for an upcoming Class Reunion that we wern’t able to go to. I’m definitely a fan of Facebook!!
Kind of what I do also....except I seldom post anything. I may do a few "likes" and that's about it. My kids don't post on there as much anymore and that was my main reason long ago to join FB.
@Yvonne Smith, you do things like I do it seems. Even in the Followers thread, my views are the same and the way I see it too. We may be different in some of our views on things but I think our core values are very much the same.
I love Facebook. I have lived in Michigan, California, Texas, North Carolina and Maine, and Facebook lets me keep in touch with people from all of these places, as well as with family members, some of whom I have never actually met.
I have had to do this too Yvonne for the same reasons and because my internet service has only one speed...and it takes forever to scroll through the things I'm not interested in...to get to the things I am.
I love Facebook because it also lets me keep in touch with my family and friends who are living in other places too and see up to date photos of them. But I don't really believe belonging to Facebook will help me live longer than if I didn't belong. If that were true than it would seem to me that just being a member of SeniorsOnlyClub would also give me a longer life too @Ken Anderson since I am sharing relationships and photos here too. In fact, there is more intimacy here for me than on Facebook.
I don't really have any objections to Facebook, it's just I'm not a person who does much that's 'news' worthy. If I had a page, it would probably be a copy of my wife's page, with the same pictures and junk. Most of our friends are married, so the wives stay in touch and she'll tell me what our friends are up to. I'll look a picture of someones grandkids and remark, "that's nice" and move on... I might be coming that 'GET OFF MY LAWN' guy you always hear about.
My husband has a Facebook page but he never uses it. Since he does have a few friends that are not mine too, I will check his page every once in awhile and let him know if there is any updates in those friends lives and show him any new photos if he wants to see them. With his vision problems it is getting harder for him to see those photos even when I enlarge them on my laptop so he is starting to care less about even seeing those. His family posts on my FB page too...so I guess sooner or later we will just shut his page down.
I always look first to see what my family and close friends have posted, and after that I look at my groups that I belong to. I have several that are conservative-based news groups, some that are historical and have some really awesome vintage pictures and/or stories. I especially enjoy the ones that are part of the history of north Idaho, where I grew up. Then I have a few groups that are more religion-oriented that I like to read through, or watch videos, some that are about health, and a couple for lost dogs and online yard sales in this area. I learn so much from these groups, and there is always a lot to read, or just to look at, or videos to watch, and there are groups for just about ANYTHING that a person is interested in looking at or learning more about. At first, I just used Facebook as a way to stay in touch with friends and family; but once I started learning about groups, and joining some of the ones I was interested in, my use of Facebook really expanded.
