In Canada we celebrate thanksgiving this coming Monday, October 9. Canada celebrates thanksgiving in October rather than November. That seems a more appropriate time to me because that is at the end of the harvest season whereas November is in the middle of stone-cold winter, but I suppose that depends on where you live to some extent.

As I understand it, Americans have their thanksgiving in late November so they will know when to start Christmas shopping. We have no such bellwether to guide us and it has had a terrible effect on our economy. Merchants are never sure when the shopping season starts either so they are never sure whether they have had a good season or not. It is all very disorganized here.

We have another thanksgiving custom that is somewhat different too. The standard for American thanksgiving dinner is the butterball turkey. We are too far north to raise butterball turkeys so we make do with butterball ravens. Today we got ours at Safeway for our thanksgiving on Monday. Years ago people had butterball bears for thanksgiving but with the smaller families of today, it’s just not practical. Leftovers would last until breakup!

A traditional Thanksgiving my family stopped doing years ago. My sister in law makes Lasagna - but she isn't from Texas either:)
I stopped making all the things my mom use to make years ago, when my family started having their own family dinners.
Besides, all the foods we are accustom to eating on the holidays , is too rich, too fattening, and got tired of eating it for a week.
For the most part usually just me and hubby, and of course he must work that day, so once again, many times just another day.
One year my hubby cooked a prime rib, and we invited all the kids and theirs....omgoodness, not a drop left! My in laws always prepared the same things every holiday, and even that side of the family got tired of eating it...until one year, we had Gulf Coast shrimp gumbo - oooh that went over
really well. The only thing I crave, and it always begins in October, is pumpkin ! I make a crustless pumpkin pie, or dump cake, and have it
daily. Then after its gone, I am finished with pumpkin until next year.:D

Wow, you are really LUCKY , @Patsy Faye ! ! Here, they had the halloween decorations put out along with the back-to-school stuff, and that was in August. By September, the garden department at Walmart was transforming into fake Christmas trees and boxes of decorations, and now that October has arrived, the aisles are filled with boxes of life-size Santa Claus figures, and you can choose either White or African-American Santa now, too.
This will stay there until the after-Christmas clearance in January, so we have five whole months (six if you count the extra month for early halloween shopping) of this to go through each and every year.
The more I think about this, the better Canada sounds......

The other annoyance is we are seeing Christmas movies in the TV listings now, we are swamped with them till January :(

I love when American Thanksgiving starts because that's when all the good Christmas shows come on like Charlie Brown and The Grinch:)
