What if Jesus had been put to death by another means ? For instance , what if the Romans had favoured the Guillotine ?
Would we as Christians wear little gold or silver guillotines on chains around our necks ?
I ask this because it forces us to think about things we do or wear and what they symbolise, not out of any disrespect.

    Deja vu.....
But , in any case, I do not think that Christians would be wearing a guillotine. I can definitely see the reasoning for your question, and if the answer totally depended on Christian tradition, then possibly this could have happened , had Jesus been put to death in some other fashion.
The tradition of wearing a cross did not start until several hundred years after the crucifixion, , and when it did start, it was because the pagans used crosses as part of their religious beliefs, and when Constantine brought them all into the Christian church, he also adopted most of their celebrations and customs.
Not only the idealizing of the cross, but also two of our most well-known and celebrated holidays, Easter and Christmas, are carryovers from Roman and pagan holy days. We all know that Jesus was not born on the winter solstice, nor do evergreen trees or Santa Claus have anything to do with Christianity, or rabbits and eggs with the crucifixion, but because it is traditional, they are celebrated anyway, just s the wearing of a cross is now considered a Christian symbol.

Consider the two Great Wars. No one seems to ever consider "what if": the Germans had not used poison gas. The billions of rounds of ammunition expended had instead been wrought into plowshares. The warmongering purveyors of violence had been crucified instead of deified?

Say what you will, believe what you will, it remains to be explained why the mentality of killing and death to others began long before the Crucifixion, and continues yet until today.

IOW, how and in what ways does the crucifixion of Christ influence the insane continuation to this day of murderous barbarism?

You are so right. We also have commercialism to contend with these days.

Is that for real? Do people actually go out and buy it?

In retail was when I began to detest hoildays. Having to set up Chritmas three months in advance every year took the delight out if me by the time Christmas came. Then like all retail you were expected to work the holidays.
I will never forget a woman bought a $150 dollars worth of gift wrap for Christmas one year. Why? Because she wanted to out do her mom's gift wrapping.
Every year people over extend theirselves and their money for the sake of trying to give good gifts. Instead of ranting on, I will say all holdays are so commerical ridden that. Then all the families who want to have big get togethers to see people that most of them dont really like each other anyway.
Eat like a pig then sleep like a dead rock.
Lolol I know this isnt everyone but there are many who do. The biggest complaint in a service line from customers...oh how I will be glad when this is over.
    KISS.....keep it simple stupid....thats my motto:D
