    ARE-YOU-KIDDING-ME?!

I usually buy powdered Garlic at Trader Joe's. They have been out. I like to throw it in a lot of stuff. Went to the grocery store today, McCormick garlic is "product of China" I wanted to scream. I live in California where, at least it used to be, Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world is. I had heard of garlic coming in from China and to look out for it. This is really getting ridiculous. I'll wait for the Trader Joe's California garlic which they said should be available again in October. Or stop at the health food store and pay triple.

That's ridiculous...I drive through Gilroy to get to my daughter's and most times you can smell the garlic in the air.

My favorite is the frozen little cubes of fresh garlic from Trader Joe's. They also freeze basil, cilantro and something else I think but the garlic is the best.

Whatever I'm cooking, I just grab a couple cubes and throw them in the pan. Use it on sautéed spinach a lot.

Isn't it though! I have heard to look out for fresh garlic (though if it's from China it's hardly fresh) that is overly trimmed. It could be from China. I look at labels at Trader Joe's for "product of" and even the boxes and labels at Winco and other grocery stores.

Thanks for the info on the frozen garlic. I've never noticed it but will look for it tomorrow when I go to TJs.

The same thing is going on with catfish. Where we live, here in the South, is where catfish farms are one of the big things. Southern people just love their deep-fried catfish and hush puppies, and it used to be that the catfish came from farms here in the southern states. Now, when you buy catfish at the grocery store, you have to look and see if it says "product of China".
It is the same thing with crawfish, which are extensively farmed, especially in Louisiana, and now those are imported as well.
How they can ship something halfway across the world and then sell it cheaper than what we grow locally is beyond me; but that seems to be what is happening with more and more products nowdays.
You have to look at everything that you buy to see where it comes from.
This was also what caused the dog food scandal that killed so many dogs and cats a few years back. The dog food companies made the dog food here, but they added ingredients that came from China, like the gluten that was found to be tainted with melmac. Some people think that this might even be why we now have so many people that are gluten-intolerant; because the large bread companies buy the gluten from China.

@Yvonne Smith ...correct! My husband is from the Texas Gulf coast. The only fish or shrimp we buy must be labeled from there or we do not buy. Him being meat cutter for many years has taught me what to buy. It can be time consuming reading all these labels on everything...trying to avoid Made in China. And labels are tricky. We stopped giving any dogs we have had snacks or food from China after 2 became ill in a few mintues of eating.
And what makes the cost so high...is catching say fish in the US...but sending to China for processing...then sending it back here. Ugh...makes me angry:mad:

@Chrissy Cross I found the garlic cubes. Like in a little tray? I didn't get any since I wasn't stir frying anything this week but I will probably try them. I noticed they are all the way from a Kibbutz in Israel. Which isn't a problem. Support your local Kibbutz I say! But again we do have the flipping garlic capital right here in California. I don't think it's too much to ask for.

Yes that's it...didn't ever look where they're from. Jeez.. next time I'm in there I'll ask why they can't get it from Gilroy.

They do have the best garlic flavor though in my opinion. Just like if you took a clove and put it through a garlic press.

@Chrissy Cross I did try the frozen cube garlic at Trader Joe's. It's good. I have a couple left.

Powdered garlic from California is back at TJ's! I've been looking almost every time I go.

The little country store my husband works part time at refuses to sell any crawfish except the ones that are harvested right here in Louisiana. Of course you pay a little more for them but the package is also a full pound instead of the 12 oz's many of the imported ones are selling. And my husband gets a discount too for working there. We usually get the crawfish for all my daughters as well as ours there.

I mainly use garlic powder now and of course it is imported from China. It really doesn't make sense to import something from China though when you are living where those things are grown though.

It used to be Farmer's markets, etc. would sell the fresh stuff and sometimes local farmer's even advertise in the newspapers, etc. that comes out in the town or City you might live in.

@Babs Hunt I have to say I would not willingly buy anything from China food wise. I looked at organic powdered garlic from the health food store (while waiting for the Trader Joe's garlic to come back in stock) but it didn't say where it was from. The McCormick garlic does say from China. I think there may be some issues with how they grow/process it.

I know we can't be aware of everything but I try to keep a look out.

Thanks @Kitty Carmel for your concern, I've been buying this same garlic powder for years and it hasn't killed me yet so I'm not going to start worrying about it now. :)

Every time I turn around there is something wrong with something...so before I eat anything I thank the Lord for it and trust Him to take care of the rest. :)

I have always preferred the various kinds of Red Garlic (German, Mexican, Inchelium, etc.). Only available twice a year, only two stores ever stock it, and I have to fight the crowd to get any.
