My DNA results are in. Scandinavia -- 41% Finland/Northwest Russia -- 27% Europe West -- 17% Great Britain -- 14% Asia -- <1%
Wow! Amazing what you can find out. How is it you decided to have your dna tested and how do they do that? Send a swab off?
I was just curious. Growing up, I was always told that I was Swedish, and that all of my ancestors came from there. But the Swedes moved around, and go around, so none of this is surprising. Finland is practically Scandinavian, so I am practically Swedish. It doesn't work the way I thought it did, though. My older brother had his done done and his came back as 57% Scandinavian, and small percentages of the others. But we inherit 50% of our DNA from both parents, so siblings don't necessarily inherit the same 50%. There are others that do it as well, I think, but I used Ancestry.com. It costs roughly $100. They send a test kit, which you fill with saliva, and send back to them. A few weeks later, you have your results. I have little doubt that the NSA has a copy of the DNA results as well, but they don't tell you that. I wasn't surprised by mine, but my wife was very surprised by hers. She was always told that she was Mexican-American but her largest percentage was Scandinavian, with Italy-Greece next, and her Native American percentage was low.
@Ken Anderson What exactly is meant by "Scandinavian"? Swedish/Norwegian area combined? Always wondered about this. Frank
If you click on the photo, you'll see the map. Yes, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. I had always considered Finland to be Scandinavian too but not Ancestry.com.
@Ken Anderson I had no idea Denmark, being a part of the Northern European area, was considered Scandinavian! Appreciate that info! My first wife, born in Germany, right near the Danish border (in Schleswig-Holstein), never spoke of Scandinavia. Note the "Holstein": Everyone has heard of Holstein dairy cows. As a kid, she was the brunt of jokes about it. Frank
The Swedes that I grew up with considered Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland to be Scandinavia. They may have included Iceland too, but I'm not sure about that because people don't talk about Iceland much. Scandinavia is considered part of Northern Europe though, not separate from it. By people, I mean - not Ancestry.com. I think Ancestry.com divides the world into people groups rather than politico-geographical areas.
My sister had that DNA test done. It's where your ancestors originated from basically. She was 41% Scandinavian then Eastern Europe and 2 % Asian and I can't remember what else. So, I'm thinking I'm somewhat similar.
@Ken Anderson.... have always wanted to to DNA test..just never can- and still cant find the money to do that. Supposedly a tad of Irish, and American Indian. That is on my father s side, have no idea about my mothers side. Have always assumed , just another Heinz 57
I got my DNA tested a couple years ago(https://www.familytreedna.com/), am 97% Western European(German-French-Swiss+ GB), and 4% Middle Eastern, which was a surprise. I'm not good with math without using a calculator, but 97%+4%= 101%.
I don't care about having my DNA done. I can't see that it would make any difference in who I am. I am 100% American and that's good enough for me.
Well, I can't say for sure, but the Western European part is consistent with my genealogy research. mmm, O.K.......
