I'd live in Chicago but not the crime and gang ridden areas.

I still have some relatives on the north side and they've never been robbed or shot or anything.

Look at all the murders in Fresno but I don't live anywhere near them. I live at almost the top right corner area.

Problem is, not everyone has the money to live in nice/nicer areas.

True but you still can avoid living smack dab in the center of gang activity.

That's true too but most of us can, might not be an ideal situation but I think it's doable.

If I didn't have such generous kids, I'd still find a way not to live in a crime ridden area. I can always afford a room in a house on this end of town. Or have roommates...not ideal but possible.

Not concerned really about crime rate, so long as it doesn't affect us. As simple everyday folks, we have no recourse to alter it anyhow, do we?

Well, since my last posting, the crime stats in this city hasn't gotten any better. In fact, I think it's gotten worse. Almost on a daily basis, there is a shooting and killing on the west or north or northwest sides. It's terrible. Seems to be either gang, drug or domestic related. Just recently, a 20 something guy shot a 4 year old in the head in his home and shot the boys mother in the leg. The 4 year old died. The guy turned himself in. All three were black. Last night, two young black guys were shot on the north side while walking somewhere at 10PM. Appear to be a "drive-by". One guy has died and other one is in critical condition.

We live on the southern end of this city and there is a reason we don't see many patrol cars here.......very little-to-no crime (that we've heard about, that is).

We have white crime here, but this city sure has it's share of black-on-black crime. A little over 40% of this city is black. Blacks love working here due to the high wages they can get.

I wonder what percentage of gang members work?

I'm pleased that I live in a place where I can defend myself without being arrested.

I'm not going to get into a discussion about the merits of a gun toting society, Ken. That's been done to death.

I can't imagine what it would be like living in constant fear of gun crime and I'm so thankful that I don't have to do so. Incidentally, I had to defend myself from an assailant a few years ago. He was admitted to hospital with some very serious injuries. The Police who investigated simply said 'self defence' and I was free to go.

Neither can I, and I don't think most people are. We have very few gun deaths in Maine, where nearly everyone has at least one gun. I lived on the Texas-Mexico border for twenty years and wasn't much in fear of gun crimes.
