I have no special knowledge about them but I can see that there could be a problem if they were obstructing view. This is probably not something that would come up unless the cop that pulled you over had a personal objection to civilians having dash cams, though; since people have routinely mounted GPS units, etc.

When I had my portable GPSin my old car I know I couldn't put it exactly where I wanted....think I had it sitting on the dash board.

Now I just use my iPhone GPS but only voice...obviously.

I'm assuming those dashcams wouldn't hold up here in court or as evidence in an accident. You don't get the whole picture I don't think.

I have no sense of direction and get lost easily but unless there is a detour I know all the routes I take and Fresno is pretty easy to get around.

It's when I'm at my daughter's or son's and have to take the grandsons somewhere that I need help.

This is a very good reason why you need the Navdy, and when you ask your daughter for one for your birthday, you can tell her that it is for your safety on the road when you are out driving. This little device seems to do everything, and it still does not obstruct your view of the road, or distract you from your driving. (Ooops ! Forgot , your birthday is gone for this year, and so is Mother's Day. Tell her it would make such a great Surprise Gift, maybe....)

You can answer the phone, make calls, send texts, and all that stuff. If you were ever in an accident, you could just tell Navdy to call for help for you , too. This is a great little gadget for someone like you, who drives a lot.

Thanks for your thoughts and links - interesting
I think they are valuable and will become the norm one day, just as CCTV

Patsy, is the one you are thinking about getting do video for both the front, sides and rear of your vehicle? I mean. if someone hits you in the rear, with no camera to video that, a dash cam would be useless for that type of accident. What about the sides of the vehicle?

Ok, I just read this online........there is no Federal law against dash cams, but before buying one, it is highly advised to check with local law enforcement. A dash cam can be considered "infringing" on others rights. Depends on what is recorded. Some dash cams also have audio inside the vehicle, which means that the driver would have to inform any passengers of this. If not, the word "infringing" comes into view again.

That's kind of what I was thinking @Cody Fousnaugh ....if it only records what's ahead of you then it's not 100% reliable.

Maybe even our insurance is different than in the UK. In minor accidents, you just exchange numbers and insurance cards, don't even call the police to the scene unless it's major. This is what Ive read and heard because Ive never been in an accident personally with me being the driver.

myself I would be more interested in a back up cam. they came about from tragic incidents involving parents backing up over they're kids. also a plus in crowed parking lots. there's always some dippo that walks behind you as your backing out.

@Cody Fousnaugh - there are various types available to buy
Not sure we 'will' get one, as we don't do a lot of driving, there again we might :)

@Chrissy Cross - minor accidents can be dealt with between the drivers here also - and insurance cover is a bit lower
if a dash cam is in the car :)

Well then it's worth getting if it lowers your insurance rate. Don't think it does with mine but who knows.

Also read that not all insurance companies recognize and/or will discount insurance to people using them. For those people who buy the cheaper ones, insurance companies don't think the video, sometimes fuzzy/grainy, isn't reliable enough for court purposes.

That's California. Maybe some other states, which have no-fault insurance. In Maine, you wait for the police to come even for a scrape in the paint.

I have a dash cam, but I haven't set it up yet. I didn't buy it for accident purposes though, but to record tours of places that I might go. Actually, I didn't buy it. My wife bought it for me as a gift, but I hinted about it.
