What do you mean by a dashboard camera? My car doesnt have any camera. I know some cars have screens that show what's behind you backing up but mine doesn't.

Its been around a couple of years, new cars have them fitted, otherwise you can buy one
Insurance is cheaper with one - if you have an accident its recorded on the camera

Ok, Ive never heard about them but I'm not very knowledgeable about cars. I know police have them but didn't know cars did.

My daughter has a fairly new Lexus SUV that has everything but I haven't seen that but wasn't looking either.

I have seen a lot of youtube videos that were filmed with a dash-cam, like when that huge meteor crashed in Russia a few years back. It seems like there are more of them in some of the European countries than we have here, although they are supposed to be helpful for insurance purposes.
I am not sure if this is what you are referring to, or if you mean the camera that is dash-mounted, and it shows behind you when you are backing up. I think that most of the newer vehicles have those installed from the factory now. I am pretty sure that @Ina I. Wonder has one in her Kia Sportage; so she can give a good opinion on those cameras.
My daughter has a new gadget that she really likes. I forget what it is called; but it is like one of those GPS maps that you can put in the address and then the map displays the road ahead and where you should be turning. The difference with this one is that it just looks like a rectangular piece of glass or plastic in front of her, and she can see right through it; but she can still see the map, too. It is pretty unique since it allows you to watch where you are driving and still be watching the GPS map all at the same time.
I do not think that this is exactly the same thing as Robin has; but this will at least give you an idea of how it looks and what it does.

I looked it up because they just aren't popular here and I wondered why. Most places it's illegal.

Here's another article about it. Think insurance companies here don't care about dash cams and won't give you a discount.

That clear GPS thing your daughter has sounds cool though @Yvonne Smith ....that's something I could use.

@Chrissy Cross - dash cams are not very big, can't see why an obstruction, you also don't need
to look at it, so not a distraction. If there is an accident, its a very useful device

I love my back up cameras, with my stiff neck it has saved me several times. I can turn my neck, just not quickly, so being able see behind at a moment is a comfort. If I have to park and wait for any length of time, those cameras also allow me to keep an eye on what's around me, or rather what's behind me, as I wait.

I did get a notice that I could upgrade my dashboard GPS to a GPS with dashboard cam. I'm still considering it.

I still don't know about half the bells and whistles my car has. Izzy taught me about the seat heater and cooler. Driving down the road not long ago I thought that I was getting a second round of menopause. Not fair. But it turns out, the control for the buttons for the seat warmer/cooler are both on the car's center console, and Izzy hits them with his small feet, the last time this happened Izzy gave me a hot seat, and Bobert got the cold one. It's funny, unless we don't catch it, and I don't drive anywhere for a week or so. Then it's time to charge the battery again. So I bought a portable battery charger about a month or so ago.

I found the information about which one Robin has. Here is a video that shows what all it does and how it works. She just loves hers ! It is called Navdy.

those HUD displays for the dash are really cool. got me to thinking. this technology came from combat fighter planes. the new F series that came out after the Nam war was the first to incorporate it. pilots were spending to much time looking down inside at the instrument panels so they came up with this. everything is on it to
