I buy a few. WINCO Foods in Western U. S. has a large bulk section and I do purchase some things there. But honestly I don't buy anything in bulk that won't be cooked.

I had someone give me a snarky reply of "you buy produce don't you" when I stated such on a vegetarian website I went to. Someone had posted about an all bulk store opening some place. Probably in an urban area. I can wash produce at least but I can't wash a corn flake or piece of granola. I actually almost envy people I see buying this stuff without seemingly a worry about it. I just won't.

Food contamination can happen at every level but I have seen people stick their hands into bulk. The ones that empty out the top into a bag are a little cleaner but I still buy only things that will be cooked like oatmeal, nutritional yeast, dry refried beans (a favorite) etc.

I do not buy any foods in bulk.Just two of us, no need really....but I do buy large sizes of tissue and paper towels.
We have a Win Co..good prices, but stopped buying there because of the decaying produce.

We mostly shop the fresh produce isle of the store; but we do go to Sam's Club about once a month and buy items that we use in larger quantities, or simply we can get them cheaper at Sam's Club.
Bobby likes the coffee beans rather than just the can of coffee, and they have the brand that he likes best at Sam's. We also get the whey protein powder there because it is cheaper than in the grocery store, or even on Amazon. We use a lot of the whey protein. It is an easy way to get protein that digests easily, and Bobby always has some before we go to the fitness center.
We do have some dried foods, like brown rice and dry beans that we store; but we don't eat enough of that to buy it in bulk.
Paper towels and TP are the main things that we get in large quantities, and I usually order those from Amazon.

I don't really shop bulk anymore except for paper towels and TP and coffee at Costco and my daughter always insists on paying for them. I only go to Costco with her since I let my card expire.

I'm familiar with Winco...it's next to one of our Costcos here and I've been in it but way back when I had my ex.

We buy alot in 'bulk' at Costco.
Mostly we will make sure the youngest, single son has
things he probably wouldn't buy on his own.

    Just a parent thing.

We also take things over for our older, widowed neighbor
as it's hard for her to get around.

And of course, you can never have enough cans of pie filling,
    Spaghetti sauce and TP...:)

We have 3 dogs next to us that think we have adopted them, they drink out of our bird feeder every day...but they do not try to harm any of the birds that feed off our feeders or on the ground around them. :)

Pickles runs out barking like a maniac if he sees any birds...I usually have to check before I let him out so I can shoo the birds away and warn them that they better fly away...quickly.

I've seen a few dead birds in my yard...could have been a cat that jumped the fence but I'm not sure.

When I mention bulk of coarse you can buy any quantity. That's one thing I like about it. You can buy a small or large amount. For example oatmeal, I can buy less than what a container on the shelf would be. That is one of the advantages of bulk, choose your amount.

I have never purchased anything in bulk. Economy size packages are sufficient for us. I once tried to get a group of neighbors together to do it but they bailed out for whatever reason.

I would purchase only cleaning products, laundry, dish detergent, TP, PT stuff like that and shop before the winter weather begins. It would take the worry of having to go out.

I think either I didn't make myself clear or people misunderstood what I meant in the first post. By bulk I meant the containers in stores where you choose your own amount. Which can be small or large. I wasn't referring to buying large amounts.

Oh, you mean like when you use a scoop and then bag it. No I've never done that either.

Yes, that's what I meant. As I mentioned in my original post, I'll buy things but only if they will be cooked. For sanitary reasons. Too many people get into those containers though some drop from a container and you hold the bag underneath. I figure if I'm cooking the product, no germs will survive.

Besides the fact that some people do bad things deliberately, others are simply pigs. I see people picking through breakfasts at hotels and, although there are tongs right there to handle it with, people will often pick it up with their hands, leaving food behind that they've touched. When you consider that along with the fact that people often don't wash their hands after using the toilet, I don't want any part of it. That would be my concern with bulk foods too. I don't mind the the ones that are in a container that doesn't allow for customers to touch anything isn't in their own bag, but I don't use a lot of stuff that's sold like that. I used to buy pistachios that were sold in bulk, but only because those were the only ones I could find that were unsalted, but our store no longer stocks that anymore.
