On this day in 1850, Levi Strauss came out with a new version of jeans.
As the story is told, the give and rip points in a man's work pants were his pockets so Levi put rivets at the corners of the pockets and the rest is history.

Just a note: I remember trying to buy a pair in1966, a year before I joined the U.S. Army. In New Orleans, all the shelves were empty because Levi was on hold for replenishing their product in lieu of supplying the military with uniforms.

...and how far they've come in style and fashion wear from those days too . I have had many pairs of levis' in different styles over the years... ..although they are very expensive here..

I rarely buy them any more simply because they're not the style of jeans I prefer these days but when I did buy them I would usually get them in Greece where they are much less expensive ..and hubs doesn't like to wear levis' because most of them have a button fly. He prefers Wranglers .

My younger brother has worked in Europe for the last 25 years or so and when he makes his visits home, one of the first things he does is buy some jeans. Either he can't get what he wants or they are just too expensive over seas.

Bobby I remember in the 80's people from here would take a trip sometimes just a weekend to fly all the way over to NYC...just to stock up on Levis' because they were so much cheaper there...and then come back and sell them here..

The better modern day ad might be one shot at Walmart. I have seen some very, very overweight people who have stuffed themselves into some jeans which are 3 or 4 sizes too small for them and no, the jeans do not rip.

I'll take Wrangler Cowboy Cut jeans anytime over Levi's. They fit me much better than Levi's do. Anyway, Wrangler was one of our major sponsors in pro-rodeo. Go to a Western Horse Show and there are a lot of Wrangler jeans being worn.

I wear skinny jeans and never really wore Levis or Wrangler.

Think my first jeans were Gloria Vanderbilt about 30 years ago, lol.

Now it's usually a brand from Nordstroms but hardly wear jeans...only time would be the couple winter months and then I prefer leggings with boots.

Funny, but we had a neighbor that always wore jeans, even in the summer months. When I ask him why he doesn't wear shorts during the those months, he said "my wife told me my legs look awful in shorts."

When I first met my wife, back in March 2000, I always wore Wrangler Slim Fit jeans (was skinny enough then) and she wore Roper brand jeans. She was really "hot" looking in her Roper jeans! Of course, today our jean waist size has changed to "bigger". My cooking hasn't helped that!

My jeans get put into the closet as soon as I can start wearing shorts in the Spring. Wife keeps hers handy because there are times she can wear them to work.

An actor and a singers that always, yes, always, wear Wrangler jeans.........actor: Sam Elliott and singers George Strait and Garth Brooks.

Actually, I'm kind an 8 ball here because I am not cheap, but rather, I am looking for less "expensive" wear. Okay, I'm cheap and I have been buying Faded Glory jeans for about 10 beans a pair at Wallyworld.

Now, as a small query because I saw a thread asking the same question in a now defunct forum some time ago, "How Often Do You Wash Your Jeans? ".

The oxymoron here is that smart people wouldn't wear torn up jeans. But, perchance a person wanted ripped jeans the smart thing to do is indeed rip them up yourself. But, if you spent good money for good jeans just to rip them up, would it be a smart thing or a stupid thing to do. It might be stupidly smart.
Even if one bought the jeans from a 2 dollar thrift store and ripped them up I guess one would then be a fad conscious but thrifty stupidly smart person.

I seem to have confused myself. Let me start from the beginning.....uh,,,,no. Maybe tomorrow or...the next day when my brain clears.

When I was a kid, my father's religious beliefs did not allow girls to wear pants of any kind. But, I was curious as to how they would feel, so I snuck a couple pair of my brother's Levi's.

I wore the first pair the day I learned to ride his bicycle, (I had been trying for days in my skirts.), another thing that as a girl I wasn't suppose to do. I hid the dirty jeans in with the other weekly wash.

The second pair I snuck was because I had to pick the ripe figs from three very large fig trees, which I had to climb all over. The sap from fig trees would cause me to get large welts, so of course I thought of my brother's Levi's again.

My parents were never home in the day, and my brother was allowed to visit his friends until dusk, so wearing the jeans was easy to hide. Until my brother came home early one afternoon. He said I ruined those two pair of Levi's with my girl shape, so he gave them to me, but he never told my parents.

That was how I started wearing Levi's, and I loved the white ones, especially with a white Levi jacket.
