My my, you're messy and picky! :)

I like leftovers and have no problem eating them for days, as long as it's still good.

Yeah, I wasn't raised that way. I grew up on a farm. Although supplemented by canned and packaged foods from the store, my mother canned fruits, vegetables, jellies, jams, and that sort of thing, and the potatoes we stored in our potato cellar lasted us through the winter, although the ones I buy in the store now go bad within a week. Even as a kid though, I tried to avoid having to eat leftovers. We had a cow, and that might have been where I learned to detest milk. It was so nasty, with cream floating around the top of it. It still seems strange that we would drink milk into adulthood, and particularly milk from anther species. We had a goat too, and goat's milk is even worse than cow's milk. We made our own butter, and that was very good - far better than any that I have had from a store.

Ive never been on a farm and I hate milk too, that might be the only thing that I absolutely can't drink. I've had cereal with milk but it's all left in the bowl, just enough on my cereal to wet it slightly.

My teen years was living on a small Duroc hog farm. We done some canning of rubarb and a couple of other fruits. Seemed like it took us forever to eat the canned stuff, but sure was good when it was put on the dinner table. The pork in our freezer came directly from the hog that was sent to the butcher. No "store-bought" pork for us. Same thing with our chickens. Killed/cleaned/cooked right at home and I helped do it. Our beef came from store, unlike some of our neighbors who raised beef cattle. Some of that wound up on their dinner tables.

From what I remember, no "Use By" dates on any of the "home grown" stuff in the freezer. Just meat wrapped in white paper and type of meat it was stamped on the package.

Boy, those were the days of good, actually GREAT, food!

I've told this story in this forum before but I'm getting old, so I'm allowed to repeat myself. We didn't generally raise pigs but we had a pig for a year or two. The pig wasn't one of my favorite pets or anything but I'd talk to it sometimes. Then, sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas, it was gone. My dad told me it had run away. It seemed odd to me that the pig would run away since it never seemed interested in going anywhere, but I was in my thirties before I thought back on that one and realized I had been lied to.

I was sheltered from a lot of that stuff, although I didn't go out of my way to notice either, because I know that we had chickens coming and going throughout the year, and I am sure that some of them ended up on the table but I never saw it.

Dad rented a freezer at the butcher's because, besides the milk cow, he raised some cattle every now and then, and there would be from four to seven deer during hunting season because everyone in the family got a license whether they hunted or not. I don't think my mom ever visited the hunting camp, but she got her deer the first day.

I know that sometimes people will tell a young person their
pet 'went to the farm...' when it really just passed on.

Probably why, when the wife says 'let's stop at that farm market'
when we are traveling, I just pretend I didn't hear her.

You're not taking me to the "FARM"!!!

Funny, when I took my wife to a couple of old friend's farms in Indiana, while we were there for a visit, she was amazed at the "very expensive" crop equipment they had and loved the "farm" look they had.

Years ago, took her to a Stockyards in Colorado. She loved that also. But, then again, she is part "cowgirl" anyway.

Not to get off-topic here, but my wife loves shooting her rifle and handguns. Until her, had never met a lady that liked firearms/shooting.

And, BTW, along with my old rodeo days of "horse-saddle-rope", I also worked at a Livestock Sale Yard in Oklahoma many years ago. Would bring cattle up, from pens, to the sale arena. Some mighty good looking beef Sold there. Just give me a nice Rib Eye or Prime Rib and I'm one "happy camper"!

I didn't say that I disliked farms, just that in general I really havent been on them. Probably in 66 years I have but just in passing.

Well, let me say this, even though part of my early life was on one, myself, like a friend of mine who also grew up farming, we absolutely knew we wouldn't be lifetime farmers. He wound up being a lawyer, but his brother ended up being a full-fledged 100% farmer.

  12. Well, I'm picky about expiration dates on perishables- like milk, fresh meat, eggs, etc.
Not "as much" with frozen products.
And I don't usually notice expiration dates on canned/boxed products, unless they're seriously expired when I decide to use one.

I'm really glad you did the right thing and did not ignore the expired cans on the shelves of the money laundering place, but what a position to be in! Very brave! You are lucky you were not taken out by one of them. But how is it that the police can get away with ignoring such blatant drug-related crime, that is what astounds me? Did it end up making you cynical? I would have been so angry and thoroughly exasperated, personally.

Yesterday I just happen to noticed the "Exp. Date" on the bottom of a jar of arthritis cream we bought a couple of months ago. The date said 2/17. I went "What???" We bought that jar in June and the expiration date was in February. What the heck was it doing on the shelf to be sold?? Another jar of arthritis cream, for feet for my wife, showed an expiration date in 2019. That's good.

Took the jar back to CVS Pharmacy and they were going to exchange it for another one. Thing is, the one they had for sale showed it expired in May of this year. The "Manager-In-Training" gave us a Gift Card refund, plus $10 off the next jar. A jar cost almost $20. And, we didn't have a receipt to show him, but he could tell we bought it there.

So, we went down the street to another CVS and they had the jar of cream with an expiration date in 2021. Got it!

The only store we really check expiration or "use by" dates are at Walmart. Now we have to check CVS as well........geeshhhhhhhh!

I'm very diligent with expiration dates and even use by dates and always check the dates on groceries in the grocery isle's in the supermarket and will not buy anything that is within three days of the use by date. My husband on the other hand does not worry with such trivial things and was livid with me when i threw out all this spices when we had first moved in together. Mid you all his spices and sauces were well overdue and had an expiration date of 6 or 7 years prior. Yuck.
