The slave trade was big business in ancient times and there are some words that come out of that trade which are all too important to the practicing Christian. They depict the actions that are the bastions behind our very belief system.

One word is Luo, or loutroo, which simply means that the bonds are loosened.
Another is Agorazo which is likened to the first in that it means to be bought or the price is paid.
Still another is Apolutrosis........a big word for redeemed.
To me, the most important one of all is the word, "Exagorazo" meaning, to be bought out of slavery, never to be sold back into it again.

If we apply all of the phrases to the very actions that Jesus took on his journey to the cross and sequential resurrection we find that He not only loosened the bonds of our slavery to sin, but redeemed us out of it by paying the price, in full, that we should never be slaves to iniquity again.

We will never fully understand "why" He did what He did, but we can at least get an inkling of understanding as to "What" Jesus did for all of us.

    HAPPY EASTER !! God Bless..........Bobby

William Wilberforce also took up the reins on this barbaric practice
He is a hero of mine and worked tirelessly through his ill health to get rid of it
He passed 3 days after seeing the Slavery Abolition Act come into force .....................

John Newton, who wrote Amazing Grace, was once a slave trader. The following is written on the back of his gravestone.

I was great that America eliminated slaver in the US but with love bombs dropped on Libya we have started it again over there. Hope Jesus can save us from this insanity

Although human slavery is truely a sin, the thread isn't so much on the subject of human atrocities imposed on other humans via slavery but that of all humans being enslaved by iniquity. It's about the methodology that God used through His son, Jesus the Savior, in order that we should no longer be burdened by those things which separate us from Him.

I did not mention it yesterday, for it was meant to be an Easter message, but there is another type of slavery that the acts of Jesus Christ relieved us from. The slavery imposed by the law of Moses. Paul said that to be under the law was to be condemned by the law.

The crucifixtion and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah brought about the era of grace or "unmerited favor". When we " miss the mark" or sin against those things written in the law, we can go before the very throne of God and ask to be forgiven and our trespasses will be forgotten provided we go before Him with a truly penitent heart.
Jesus paid the price, once and for all, that we should be relieved from the condemnation and slavery of sin. We no longer must find a suitable sacrifice for our transgressions because Jesus was that sacrifice.

Now, does that mean that we should sin that grace should abound, as Paul said? He also replied to his own question as, God forbid.

There is always another question which plagues Christian theologians in every denomination. Just like the fact that our "joy" cannot be taken from us but we must give it away, can we return to our previous condition of slavery after we were freed from it?
In my way of thinking the answer is yes. If not, why would Peter write what he did referencing II Peter 2:21-22?

Clearly, from His words and those of His apostles, Jesus didn't consider our position here on earth to be of primary importance, believing that we had more important things to strive for.

Hence the axiom, we are in the world but not of the world. Nice addition Ken.

Actually Jesus taught that to be a servant instead of a King, etc. on earth was the best way to become royalty in Heaven. :)

And we become , or are being becoming, bond-slaves of righteousness, of Jesus, as well as be becoming His friends and His children, God's Own children, as He says, and not only slaves.
