We live in an area highly frequented by Tourists, whose monetary expenditures here greatly enhance the low cost of living here. The lowest cost of living index for the whole state exists here in Mohave County, Arizona, the 7th. largest county in the United States. It's actually a "gambling mecca", adjacent to Laughlin, Nevada, with it's 10 major Resort Hotels, which included (at one time), Sam Boyd's Gold River, and the Flamingo Hilton (now Aquarius), and still is supported by the first and original Don Laughlin's Riverside Hotel, the Edgewater, Pioneer, Golden Nugget, River Lodge, and Harrah's. Competition is pretty fierce, as the area lacks the overall glitter and glitz of Las Vegas with it's infamous reputation, but lays claim to immediate attention due to the presence of the Colorado River. The entire Laughlin/Bullhead City infrastructure lies along it's banks. Proximity to Southern California draws many from that area to spend weekends here, enjoying the river and the lustrous gaming available. Thus, a great variety of tour companies offer special trips to Laughlin, many by bus, and special events such as the Laughlin River Run, aimed specifically at motorcycling clubs and individuals. That annual event, lasting just short of one week, draws 30 to 40 thousand motorcyclists to the area. We encountered this past weekend the most unusual specialized tour we have seen: several busloads of folks arrived at the Edgewater, the majority of folks being blind! There were, of course, friends and family members along to guide them as necessary. My wife & I witnessed this unusual exchange: a Security Guard escorted a blind man into our elevator car, while admonishing him for creating a disturbance at a Craps Table! We overheard him say that the guy had been warned for harassing folks at the table, and if he returned to the Casino, he would be charged with Trespass. The guy responded he had been often trespassed upon. (The man was Black, very well-dressed, about 30). We were agape! We felt that turning 100 or so blind gambling zealots loose in a casino was pushing P.C. a bit too far: try to picture blind folks being dealt cards, requiring an interpreter, or throwing dice, relying on and trusting the calls of the Croupier. Yet, we understand that these folks want also to "have a life", and experience it. During this ongoing debacle, a rather new thought crossed my mind: generally, a gambler is not allowed to have a "helper" assist him or her, to prevent use of computers, for example, in decision-making. Most of the blind wore dark "shades"; some did not. What process might prevent an individual having perfect eyesight from donning dark glasses, claiming to be blind, thus allowing outside help, from bilking the Casino by using forbidden means of "help" not available to the non-blind? @Frank Sanoica You got me thinking about some tours I have taken over the years. I know most people wouldn't get excited about touring a plumbing company, but touring the Kohler Co. was enjoyable for me. They have been around for over 144 years, based out of Kohler, Wisconsin. They even designed and built some control units for Apollo 11 for a trip to the Moon. On our last trip to Disney World, my wife treated me to 'The Magic Behind Our Steam Trains' Tour. It's 3 hours of getting the trains ready for their daily runs through the Park. I even got to help 'make' the steam for the first run! Still the high point of that trip. I like it when a company will open tours and behind the scene type access.
