I have just returned home from being away in another state for 5 days ,We have our home on the market because it is becoming to much work keeping it up to our standards of living ...we are our own worst enemy actually
On arriving home and entering my home ,I thought what's that smell [IMG] because we have septic systems here before going away anywhere I always put a good dose of toilet cleaner in the bowl and pour nice smelling pine o clean down the drains ....we don't often have any problems but I like to be sure in case somone looks at our home while we are away.

Another thing we do if we are going away for a few days is to switch off the lights switch in the meter box ,because If we get a flick in the power in the area ( which happens often) our remote control ceiling light/ fan
comes on ,and we don't want it on for 24 hours a day while away

Sorry all that's where I finish being NICE [IMG] .....for today I'm so incensed / disgusted since coming home .....on switching on the lights .....the lights in the bathroom/ vanity/ toilet all seperate rooms in one area came on ...and when I went to switch them off I found the toilet seat / lid up

    I thought that's strange [IMG]

Hubs is the only one who uses this bathroom/ toilet unless we have visitors and he is the cleanest male I've ever found ..there is NEVER a spot on the floor

Looking further my feet stuck to the floor , [IMG] I then noticed there was pee all over the toilet ,on the floor ,several foot prints on the toilet floor ,the same foot prints led out through the vanity area, into the dining room / kitchen .(light grey/white tiles) ?

The only explanation was we had an open inspection on our home while away ,:eek:and the agent hired a new person recently and had him do the The open inspection ,it's lucky we didn't have anyone come look at the house during the open ...can you imagine what impression they would have got if us ?? [IMG] The smell was overpowering in the house as he'd not flushed the toilet

I rang the agent and all I got was a sorry we won't use him again. I INTEND GETTING HIS NAME AND GOOGLING THIS DISCUSTING PIG ....and googling him to find out more who he is ???????..we also suspect he looked through drawers and cupboards,as they were left ajar

Wow, that is AWFUL, what a terrible thing to come home to, @Kate Ellery ! ! I started to put a "like" on your post and then realized that was not what I wanted, although what I liked was that you are doing something about this agent that left your house like that. I hope that you are able to at least have him face some sort of discipline from his company, and unless there is some kind of reasonable explanation for what happened, I would think that the real estate company would want to fire this guy for his irresponsible (and maybe unlawful ) actions.
His going through your house and looking at everything cannot be a legal thing, and surely there are laws about realtors that would prevent this from happening. Hopefully, nothing was taken. It almost sounds like someone might have been staying at your house while you were gone, to make that bad of a mess in the bathroom........ is that possible ?

Here's how the agent describes our home

This very neat property is well situated just a short stroll to the beautiful sandy beaches the area has to offer. Attributes of this 8 year old home are 4 good sized bedrooms including built-in-robes, 2 bathrooms, large kitchen overlooking family and dining areas and separate lounge. Main living areas are tiled with combustion heater and ducted air conditioning throughout. Double carport under main roof, full length rear verandah, window shutters and solar power. Garage and carport easily accessed via ****+*Street. Established yard with lawn and fruit trees out the finishing touches to this impressive home!

I'm getting a cleaner to give the affected area a through clean this afternoon, I washed the floor and some of the toilet yesterday to get rid of the stink ...The cleaner is not costing me anything ..I didn't fell like cleaning after getting to the airport ,flying home on a flight that was late due to,windy conditions ..then traveling 2 hours home ..
so it only got a half a bottle of bleach in half a mop bucket of water clean ..I've never encountered such a disgusting act on someone's home ..The person has been sacked ..

I would be sending the cleaning bill to the agent and after compensation get a new agent.

Well, I didn't see an introduction area so I guess I'll make this my first post, since I have been purusing this forum for a long time. For twenty years we had spent our winter months on an island off Florida 's gulf coast. Our other main residence is up north on a lake in a forest. (Thus the name).

Before we made the decision to alarm this up north residence, you wouldn't believe how many break-ins we had. Every single year. They would steal the most random items. Like one year we arrived back to no pots and pans. Of course there were items that really hurt. Like every single bit of camping equipment, statuary that I thought I had hid pretty savvy, etc.

But the most disgusting things were: using the toilet ("2) and leaving it, leaving used syringes around and used condoms. I'm amazed at what some people will do to an empty residence. Always broke in through different means. Breaking windows, doors, etc.

    Unacceptable!!!!

There is an introduction area but just what you did was what I had in mind when I first created the forum, which was people introducing themselves with their first post. Welcome to the forum.

I have been fortunate in that I have had very few such events, and I most often left my doors unlocked when I was single. It is an unsettling feeling though, being aware that someone was in your house while you were gone. Of course, in the case of the OP, she knew that there might be people coming in to see the house but still, finding the mess upon her return, it must have felt more like an intruder.

Thank you for your welcome Ken. I'm ridiculously shy but decided to jump in with my two feet.

We also sold our main residence in a large city while we were in Florida. Nightmare. I had my niece checking on it for me. She reported all sorts of things. All wood floors (remember winter months) completely wet from boots, all the fans turned on high and left like that. (Of course it was an old home and we definitely had a ghost) a story for another time. But total disregard for a pristine home. Made me feel sick. Literally.

Welcome @Lakely Forest , :) I hope to see more of you in the future.

I too have had to deal with theft over the last couple of years, and I'm living in my home. I don't know how you and @Kate Ellery manage deal with this issue. I wonder if there are any services that you can hire to keep a close eye on such properties. The damage has to costing more than such a service would. And I do know that when we live in a home for awhile, it actually hurts to see that someone would try to destroy it.
