I'm gonna get me a small size laptop, then on those uncomfortable days, I can use that
    whilst sitting on the settee.
Do you use a gadget like this via battery power ?
Will I have to charge everyday, my kindle loses power whether I'm reading or not

I like that you're going to do that, so that you can sit more comfortably but I have an iPad and don't know anything about laptops.

You might look at one of the all-in-one units, @Patsy Faye . Both Ina and I have a Dell XPS-18, although we seldom use them because we love our iPads so much. I put the iPad on charge each night; but I use it a lot all day.
There is a huge difference between an actual tablet like the iPad and the Kindle. The size is one major difference, because it is so small and hard to actually see things on that small of a screen. The larger tablets can also have a keyboard case, which makes them almost identical to having a laptop, but they will be more versatile, as well as lighter weight.
The larger tablets also can use apps, which are great to have for a variety of reasons. I think you can use apps on the Kindle, too; but with the larger tablets, they are more useful , in my opinion.
Anyway, back to the all-in-one. They come in different sizes, too, and have all of the capabilities of a computer; but can be carried around and used like a laptop or a tablet. They have a touchscreen that you can use, or you can use the mouse and keyboard, which ever you prefer.
The XPS has little flipper feet, so that it can stand up on its own and does not need to be held in your hands like a tablet does.
If you also get a lap desk, then you can relax in your most comfortable chair, and put the laptop on the lap desk. Mine was about $12, so they can be very cheap, and I have used the same lap desk for well over 5 years now.
Before you invest in a heavy laptop, or more expensive all-in-one, I think it would be good to at least look into some of the larger tablets. Microsoft makes some good ones if you are determined to stick with using a Windows operation system. Here is the Microsoft Surface 3, which is a 10" screen, about the same as an iPad, but with Windows 10 instead of iOS operating systems.
I looked on Amazon, and an older model Surface starts at under $200; so pretty affordable, and would be very convenient to use.

I have a laptop, Toshiba, Windows 10, and I love it. I can sit in my recliner and kickback. It's a 17" screen size, and full keyboard. My battery lasts for several hours at a time, but it's also easy and safe to just plug it in and use it.

One thing I found for it to sit on my lap, and still get lots of air circulated, I actually found at Walmart. It was for a "lap" tv-tray to eat on but works great for my laptop, about 10 bucks I think. They do have more expensive types as well for a laptop. Some made with memory foam pads etc. Here's a couple pics of mine. It also is wide enough to put your mouse on if you use one. I've always used a cordless mouse with my laptop because I just got so used to using one, and I never liked the touchpad, and I can't type worth a darn from a screen keyboard;)

The tray also fits across my recliner arms so little actual weight on my legs. Just another idea for you Patsy;) denise

I like the tablets, I now have a kindle fire, but I use it for quickie stuff, like checking emails, looking up things online, and reading books, but I don't like holding them in my hands for too long. I do have a book case for my kindle that turns into a stand so I can read without holding it though. Most of the tablets have that including the Ipads.

here's the little tray I found:

This is so cool, hadn't seen one of these, has everything! The only thing about that one, if it were something to replace my laptop that is, is the screen is too small for my games, but to use as a go-anywhere, wow, very neat yvonne! I may end up with an adjustable lapdesk too. I saw quite a few while searching for picks of the little tray I posted. A laptray with wheels would be so perfect. I have to lift mine and put it on my TV trey or end table when I get up.

When you buy one with Windows 10 be sure and ask if it's the latest version. I got my Win 10, and it had some bugs. They got them out though in this latest version:

@Yvonne Smith - that's similar to the one I was looking at, I think its 11.6 screen, which should be OK
I like the idea of the little table too :)
    Thanks for your trouble Yvonne

@Denise Happyfeet - sounds like you're well sorted there Denise, I'd love to be sorted too. Have taken your suggestions

Sorry I didn't get the Version info attached the first time, don't let them short you, although you can download it yourself, if your paying them, may as well have them do it. Chances are a new one will have the upgrade though;) Let us know, I'm excited for you, I love getting new gadgets;)

This is what my lap desk looks like, except I don't have the little lamp on mine, which would be even better. I think that Ina has the light on hers, and if I ever need another one, I will get one with the light, too.
I use mine in the recliner, and the lap desk balances on my lap and on the arm of the recliner, because I sit kind of sideways for comfort.
I think that a tablet would not need to be charged as often as a laptop does, plus they do not get hot like a laptop can do. I also like the versatility of using it like a laptop with the keyboard, or being able to hold it without the keyboard when I am drawing or something where I want to be able to turn it and use the touch screen to draw with.
