..the reasons are that the UK wants them kept on, and why the US is considering lifting some of them?

Why might they be good, or bad for America, and the same question for the UK? I really want to understand, because only 2nd to the US, is my love for the UK, and Canada.

Several articles on it, but I'd like to hear what folks here have to say. I had to look up the exact meaning of the word, but knew if they were "laws" basically.

Are you referring to sanctions on Russia? Assuming so, you have to realize that these sanctions were mostly just placed on Russia before Obama left, as a way of making Trump's presidency more difficult for him. I think that Trump wants to develop better relations with Russia, and I think that would be good for us as a nation.

No, that doesn't mean that we trust Russia explicitly. Russia has its own interests in mind, as we should our own, but there are many areas in which we should be able to have common interests, such as in combating Islamic terrorism. Quite frankly, Obama was on the wrong side in Syria. While we were fighting ISIS elsewhere, ISIS was our ally in Syria, and that doesn't make any sense. Russia is a more natural ally for us than China or any of the Islamic countries.

So I think that Trump wants to have a clean slate. I don't think that means that he will never have a problem with anything that Russia does, but I don't think that he believes that it is our place to police the world, nor do I.

I so agree with "policing" the world, forget that!!

Ok, first I wasn't thinking that those sanctions were placed by obama, so thank you for the reminder of that. He was such a busy bee trying to screw up America I lost track. So now it will be up to Trump to lift them or not. Well, all I can say is I hope we can agree on whatever we do, I mean UK and US.

Removing the sanctions will be part of the President's "Clean-up in Isle 1600"!

Yes, I guess it would be. I need to dig in and find out exactly what they are so I can understand, hopefully, why the UK doesn't want them lifted. I think that's what their Prime Minister said.

Its a tricky one Denise but personally, I'm willing to go along with President Trump on this
Its worth giving his outlook a try
The UK may disagree on certain matters the same as America will disagree, because things 'are'
    so uncertain in particular instances.
We have idiots in the UK that have tried to thwart Theresa's efforts, the same with Trump
Take each leader on 'their own' merit and disregard the rest is what I do :)

The sanctions were placed against Russia back in 2014 by the US the EU and the UK for Putin's annexation of Crimea part of Ukraine, the situation has never been resolved

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he is only in the early stages of considering whether to lift U.S. sanctions on Russia, as British Prime Minister Theresa May, other foreign officials and U.S. lawmakers cautioned that such a move would be premature.

With Trump expected to speak by phone on Saturday with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since taking power a week ago, speculation has been rife that he is close to lifting sanctions imposed by then-President Barack Obama over Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula in 2014.

Such a move would likely cause consternation among European allies as well as many in the U.S. Congress who are also troubled by Russia's intervention in the Syrian civil war and by U.S. intelligence agencies' finding that Moscow meddled in the U.S. election campaign.

"As far as the sanctions, (it is) very early to be talking about that," Trump said, while insisting that he wanted to follow through on his campaign pledge to pursue better relations with Russia.

His caution on the Russian sanctions came in response to a question at a joint news conference at the White House with May, the first foreign leader to visit the president since his inauguration.

May made clear Britain wants to continue sanctions until Putin carries out the requirements in a ceasefire agreement arranged in Minsk, Belarus, in 2014. This view is shared by European allies who fear Putin could become more expansionist if he feels Trump will not intervene.

"We believe the sanctions should continue until we see the Minsk agreement fully implemented. And we’ve been continuing to argue that inside the European Union," May said.

It's helpful to me Patsy, to get others views on things. I like to think I am open-minded, but my hope is that the UK, Especially England and the US always remain friends. I have great respect for England, but all I really have studied is how we fought together against Hitler, and how I loved Churchill. I, of late, have been very impressed with Nigel, he just doesn't back down, love him!
