With the introduction of the smartphone many people are ditching their bulky cameras for the phone camera. I have both but I must admit it is so easy just to snap something that catches your eye with the phone. Which do you use more often?

I normally use my smart phone for taking pictures because I am not a camera person. My husband is the unofficial photographer of the family and when he is around, I always forget to use my smart phone for photo purposes. But when reminded, I would take pictures with my phone and upload it to social media for the benefit of my circle particularly those relatives and friends who are in other countries. But I rarely do that during vacations since my policy is to enjoy my trip and not for posting photos in social media.

By the way, they say that the camera of my Samsung S3 has a good resolution and the video is HD already. But I seldom use the video although my gallery has a lot of photos already.

I carry a Sony cyber shot camera in my bag with me everywhere. It is not a large camera at all. In fact it is only a bit bigger then an actual wallet. I find that I never know when inspiration might hit, plus I use it on the job often to record things that need repair. The last few weeks I have noticed, on my way to work, a few things that look really cool against the changing fall back drop. I am one of those people that will end up late in the morning because I pulled off to snap a picture or 20.

The one thing is a pole with the old style air raid horns on top. It has rusted to a wonderful hue and looks scary yet cool. The other is a small foot bridge with the lovely fall foliage behind it. In the morning we are getting the slight low level fog and that bridge looks so dream like and whimsical. I know I have to get a shot before it snows.

I do like that people have IPhone cameras and can not begin to tell you how helpful that is on the job. Instead of people trying to describe hat they are looking at- more and more people are getting so they just shot me a text picture. Whomever said a picture is worth a thousand words knew what they were talking about.

I use both because I often have my phone with me, but not my camera. But if the purpose of my trip is to take photos, I'll bring a camera. Many phone cameras have very good resolution and will take good picture, but you can't do anything fancy with them,

I totally stopped using my camera after Robin got me the iPhone. It seems like I would never have the camera along with me unless I knew that I was going to take a picture of something anyway.
Then, when I did take pictures, I had to dock the camera, connect it to the computer and upload everything before I could do anything else with the picture.

With the iPhone camera, it is always right there in my purse, and anything that I take a picture of is automatically uploaded into my ipad ; so there is no hassle with doing the upload thing.

Plus, if you want to send the picture, you can email, message , or text it right away if you want, none of which I could do with pictures from my camera.
I had to keep the camera on the charging dock, or it would be dead when I did decide to run outside and take a picture of something, like a deer in the yard. Now, since I have to keep the phone charged up anyway, there is never a problem with a dead camera battery.

I think that if someone is really into photography, then having an excellent camera would be important; but for someone like me, who just takes pictures of something mostly to show them to someone else (like on facebook or here in the forum), then just using the camera in the phone is perfect.

I no longer have a cell phone, but I do have a camera (Canon PowerShot) and a tablet. The tablet takes o.k. pictures, and I will sometimes use those for Instagram, but for product pictures, it's best to have the highest quality possible, so I usually will take them with the camera, upload to the computer, and edit somewhat (usually just cropping and maybe lightening, for clarity), before posting. If I'm posting product pics on Instagram, I then email them to myself, open them on the tablet, and upload to Instagram. It can be a lot of work, but even though Instagram is supposed to be a mobile app, most or many use high quality photos, so I have to do the same.

When I'm going walking, I will try to take my camera, in case i see something interesting. I'll often see egrets and herons, as well as plants and flowers I find pretty or interesting. On two occasions, I got to the park/trails and realized I had forgotten to put the battery back in my camera, so it was useless. In the past, when that happened, I'd simply take pics (lower quality, of course) with my phone or iPod, but I don't have those anymore.

Hopefully, at some point, I'll be able to get another smart phone, and I will definitely carry both that and the camera with me when I go out on my walks, because I enjoyed being able to upload pics to social media immediately, but since my camera doesn't have wifi, I can't do that. That's an option I'd like on a camera, but I chose this camera over one with that option, because the specs for picture quality were better on this camera.

:oops:I don't have a smartphone, but do have a digital camera that has no zoom. It's just for beginners this little camera I bought on sale at amazon.com. I like my camera for it's easy to use and has enough for me right now to use correctly. I like the smartphones advertised on television. It seems so easy to use and upload automatically to any computer. I can't have any cell phones for my Mom has a pace maker and doesn't want any cell phones of any kind near her. So for now my little digital camera has got to do.

Problem is, like with my SIL, people take photos with their iPhone and that's where they stay. Yes, they can be shared on Facebook, but other than that, the photos stay right on their phone. If the person doesn't put some photos on Facebook, they have to show their photos to you in person on their iPhone. Well, when family and/or friends live States away, that isn't going to happen. Also, in order to get the photos off of the iPhone, I have to use two types of computer software. One is iTunes (for syncing) and the other is Wondershare (for putting photos on a PC (to go onto a USB) or taking photo's off of a PC and onto an iPhone.

Wife and I both have an iPhone. Hers is a 4s and mine is a 6. We also have a small 11mp GE Digital, that we got on sale from Sears a couple of years ago. We take that on our boat. Our main camera is a 8mp Panasonic, that I love. It is an 8mp and uses a Media Card. I always take that camera when I know we will be taking special photos.......like, of the Budweiser Clydesdales at our local Bud Plant. Take the photos, go home and take out the Media Card, slide into PC and download photos into software to edit or go right onto a USB.

We both use our iPhone to take photos, but I really prefer the large Panasonic Digital. I have "burst" mode on that camera, so I can take multiple pictures and pick the best one I like. We also have a few "favorite" photo's on our iPhone, but not many. I think I have 20 photos on my iPhone.

Verizon installed a program for moving photos from my smart phone (not an iPhone) to the computer but after the last upgrade of my phone software, that program no longer works and when it prompts me to download a new one, it says that an Internet connection is not available, although I do have an Internet connection. In fact, even when I use the phone's hotspot as my connection, it says that an Internet connection is not available. Prior to that, I had no problem getting my photos from my phone to my computer.

    Yes, gotta love electronics!
BTW, Ken, as far as I know, isn't a Smart Phone an iPhone? Just looked it up on my iPhone and it said it was.
Anyway, we have iTunes software on our PC and I ended up buying the Wondershare software when we got our 4s's a couple of years ago. I only use the iTunes software for "syncing" our phones to our PC. When my old 4s took a dump, we got me the 6 and I just connected it up to our PC and downloaded everything that was on my old 4s onto the new 6. Actually, I couldn't believe how easy it was to do. I use the Wondershare strictly for transferring photo's from our iPhones to our PC or transferring photo's from the PC to the iPhones.
I'm sort of the "techy" type and my wife loves it.

An iPhone is a smart phone. I don't know that a smart phone is necessarily an iPhone. Unless I have something wrong, an iPhone refers to an Apple product, doesn't it?

I think that any phone that can connect up to the internet and you can use it for surfing and such as well as for the regular phone stuff, is considered to be a smartphone. This includes the iPhone, but it is not just exclusively an iPhone.
When I sync my iPad or iPhone to iTunes, it also updates all of the pictures on the Dell computer; so I do not have to do anything special to get them on there.
I share pictures on Facebook, and I can also iMessage them to my family or friends that have iPads. I use Flickr (which is free) and Picasa Web Albums to store my pictures in the cloud.
I know that Amazon also has picture storage; but I have never needed to use it thus far.

That's what I said. In response to @Cody Fousnaugh's comment that a smart phone is an iPhone, I said that an iPhone is a smart phone but that a smart phone isn't necessarily an iPhone, since an iPhone refers specifically to the Apple smart phone.

@Yvonne Smith my iPod Touch would sync and upload my pictures, as well. I could set the option @Cody Fousnaugh either to delete the pictures when I was done, or not, so I could have the pictures both on the device and on the computer. I usually chose to delete them, to make room on the device for more. Smart phones can be iOS (Apple), Android, or Windows. As far as I know those are the only 3 operating systems, but I could be wrong. iPhones are only one type of smart phones. Oh, and then there are Blackberries, which I guess are also smart phones, but run on the Blackberry system.
