Today, I used the full recipe, always 1/2 before. Kind of a mistake. Anyhoo, the big can of Peach Halves, 29 oz., was from 99-Cent Store, a buck! Bargain, USA product! I figured too much for one Kolach, but the dough turned out to be too much for two! Here's how the 3 turned out. The dark one is Poppyseed Pie Filling from Solo, bought too long ago to remember, in MO, likely mid-2000s. Tasted normal, so figured, what the heck, I'll only die once, and my wife won't eat this stuff, due to carbs. This one so closely resembles my Grandma's work, which I have been shooting for, I can't believe it. Her outer edge crust was always about 1" thick, the bottom of the pie 1/2". Nary a drop of topping seeped through, or spilled over! Last time, I was scraping burnt sugar off pans for a long time...... The Poppyseed creation. When I mentioned Poppy, our friend from IN was shocked! "You guys EAT that?" Well, Poppyseed filling, called Mak in Czech, was the commonest filling or topping to be used in our family. Cooled finally, I couldn't resist snipping off a piece of the Peach! Luscious and good! Satisfying, I know my Mother would be pleased to see me carrying on this old baking tradition........Frank
Looks delicious, @Frank Sanoica . I make poppy seed chicken but I've never heard of poppyseed pie filling. What's in it besides poppy seed?
@Shirley Martin Corn syrup, poppyseeds, water, corn starch, natural flavorings, Citric Acid. The Solo fillings have thick consistency out of the can, and will not thin and run off or out of dough while it's baking. My Mother almost never made these big Kolache, but my Grandma did always, usually using fruit she had picked locally. My Mother's specialty was Kolacky, note the spelling, this means "small Kolache". They are cut from rolled out dough using a glass tumbler, then a depression in the center is made using a spoon. The Solo filling is placed in the depression like a blob of fruit. I've used preserves of Blackberry, but that tends to run off when baking, messy. The Solo company was started long ago by a Czech. immigrant from Bohemia. I looked at their site. I printed the recipe for oatmeal kolacky .Being southern and all, I'll probably call it clacky.
My Honey loves lemon poppy seed muffins but when he was working at another store that did random drug tests he told me I could not make those poppy seed muffins for him anymore because they would show up as him taking drugs in random testing. Something to do with the Poppy plan that opium come from I think? Does anyone know if this is true?
@Babs Hunt Heard this many times, often enough to think perhaps some unfortunate individuals experienced it. Difficult to confirm without having detailed knowledge of whether poppyseed derived material other than opium itself is used as the discriminating material. Or would that be "incriminating", or both?
