Learning is a lifetime challenge to keep your mind keen and your body healthy. I found a place where you can get diplomas, learn about what interests you or learn more about the internet and much more. They've recently added courses like hospitality courses. There is nothing like a college & university edu, but they cost so much. At alison.com you can get much education for free.

Thanks for the heads up. Although I am familiar with these type of sites, I did not know about this one in particular. I recommended it on another thread here today. Have you checked out any of their courses, yet? I find that some formats are easier to maneuver then others. Sometimes, I like to take a course that is on a time schedule. This affords me the opportunity to interact and communicate with other participates in discussion boards. Other times, I like a course that is self-paced. This is especially helpful, if I am having a busy month. Sounds like this is the direction Allison is taking with their course offerings.
The Open University in the UK has a plethora of free online courses that are available to anyone, wherever you may be in the world. I've done a couple and there is a good range of topics. http://www.open.edu/openlearn/free-courses
OK, I'll bite. I have signed up for a the diploma in Mental Health Studies. I have taken all the courses for a Social Services Diploma at my local university, but I didn't do the practicum and so I didn't get the diploma documentation. I saw the post about Alison.com and thought, Why not? What could it possibly hurt? I wanted to take a full time 6 month certificate at my university, but I am working quite a bit and don't think I'd have the stamina to do both. Since Alison's courses look self paced, this will work well. The need for trained mental health care workers is rising in the area I live, it will be interesting to see if my getting this diploma will make a difference in my ability to get work in that field. I will keep you all posted.
Strangely, I want to study tiling and renovations. To my husband's discouragements, he says I'm quite past my energy level to do manual labor. I'd like to do apprenticeship and learn how to do house renovations, instead. It's taking forever to get some work done around here. Really. I'm serious!
Free is always good, and many of us have a little extra time now to study things we weren't able to earlier. I'm going to have a look around both places and see what I find.
I enjoyed browsing at Alison.com for some courses I'd like to commit to learning. I'm interested in "Fundamentals of Financial Accounting." And Web Development and Designing. And on some days, learn Tiling and Building Apprenticeship. Full hands.
Looks like a good self-improvement site. Just a few things I noticed browsing it ... 1. Their own spelling and grammar in their copy is atrocious. You'd think a site that offers so many English classes would have an editor. 2. What is the difference between a "diploma" and "certificate" course? In neither can I see any accreditation, so just be advised that if you think you're getting a college "degree" think again. The words "diploma" and "certificate" mean absolutely nothing. But if you're taking these course solely for self-improvement, that's fine. 3. I believe you have to pay for your certificate / diploma at the end of the course. So, in a way, for many people this will not be an entirely FREE course.
I guess I'm too suspicious, but I don't like the fact that they want you to log on with Google, Facebook, or Yahoo. If they won't let me just sign up and look over their site I want no part of them.
Also, I think if you are looking for a job that requires a diploma or degree, I think most places will choose the applicant who has one from a real College or University. For just learning something for your own use, I'm sure it's fine.
When your goal is to learn new skills and or, improve on ones you used to know but have forgotten then check out homeschooling sites on line. There are many free sites where you can brush up on math and science, and a host of other subjects and skills. There are lots of high school and collage based sites where you can get a head start on computer programming, as well as, many other subjects for free.
