The citrus trees along the riverwalk adjacent to the Colorado Belle Hotel, were planted no doubt shortly after the hotel was built. Maybe 30 years ago. Still prolific producers, there are grapefruit, oranges, and tangerines:

This tree, as most of them are, is at least 30 feet tall. Given their appearance, these fruit will be pickable next month. Alas, though, so many folks walk by, the odds of reaching one are usually slim. Most wind up remaining
on the trees until they fall off, whereupon they are gathered up by custodial employees and discarded. Seems such a shame. Great P.R. could be had just by expending the energy of picking them ripe, and donating them to the to the Food Banks. Such is the lack of thoughtfulness displayed by "big business".

The fragrance must be wonderful to passersby.

    @Von Jones
It is most delightfully fragrant there during March, when the trees are in blossom. Back when we lived in the Phoenix area, there were hundreds of acres of citrus all located in the southern part of town, in one place, and the fragrance permeated the air for miles!

Lots of orange groves on Ave 9 my shortcut through all the orchards...cuts 20 mins off my trip but my point is I'm always seeing oranges on the ground and I think the same thing you are saying...should be given to food banks or shelters.

That was the most AWESOME. Video, @Joe Riley ! I thought it was one that I had seen before , but this was not the same one, just similar. But , being the tender-hearted Romantic that I am, this one brought tears to my eyes as I watched and listened to your video, just like that other one did.
Thank you for sharing this with us, and for all of the other wonderful, enlightening, and encouraging thoughts you share with us on this forum each and every day, Joe.
I always look forward to reading your posts on here.
    Blessings.......

Effects of citrus fragrance on immune function and depressive states.

"In our previous experiments on animals evidence was found that citrus fragrance can restore the stress-induced immunosuppression, suggesting that citrus fragrance may have an effect on restoring the homeostatic balance. Since a dysregulation of the neuroendocrine and immune function is thought to be associated with psychosomatic or psychiatric disorders an attempt was made to restore their mental health by stimulation of one of the sensory systems".

"Fragrance (citrus was our choice) which comforts through stimulation of the olfactory system was applied to depressive patients. It was given to 12 depressive subjects and the results indicated that the doses of antidepressants necessary for the treatment of depression could be markedly reduced. The treatment with citrus fragrance normalized neuroendocrine hormone levels and immune function and was rather more effective than antidepressants".

So, this would suggest that there is more to that old saying about "stop and smell the roses" than we even knew there was ! It explains part of the reason why being out in the garden and seeing all of the beautiful blooms and smelling the intoxicating fragrances seems to put us into a state of blissful peace and happiness. Here we thought it was just that the flower garden was a serene and beautiful place to relax; but it was our body "doing its thing" all along, @Joe Riley .
    .
I actually opened this thread to comment about my orange tree out in the yard. This spring, it had an abundance of blossoms, which started to turn into fruit, and then almost all of them disappeared, eaten by bugs, we think.
Anyway, two or three of them managed to survive and by the end of summer, they had gotten about the size and color of a lime, and Bobby said that we must have gotten a mis-labeled tree and we had limes instead,
However, we didn't pick the limes, and today i was out working in the yard and looked and there are two beautiful golden oranges on the little tree ! At first, I thought they were lemons, because that is about the right size and the color was pale for an orange; but when I looked at them closely, the shape is more round like and orange, and they are actually too gold for a lemon.
So, we do have an orange tree after all, and will have oranges before long, one for each of us.

But, do fragrances have any effect upon those who cannot detect smelling them? I have almost no perception left of detection of fragrance, odor, or even stink. If I pour household bleach out on a dirtied cloth, I smell nothing. No citrus from cut oranges, nor stink of hops upon opening a beer. I live with it, little else to do. Now and then, for unknown reasons, I may be boiling up my evening soup, and suddenly fragrant memories of cooking vegetables return, if only for a few minutes. Why? I dunno.

Taste, and the satisfaction of tasting food, are said to work hand-in-hand. I eat because I'm hungry, taste salty, sweet, and a bit of sour, but little else. Oh, yes, the "mouth feel" of greasy heavy foods is still there, such as fried chicken!

So, what am I to do? Complain to the Medicos? Any chance of securing satisfactory return of my taste buds thusly? I doubt it. Frank
