i lived here from 1997 to 2003 when we moved there for business. At first I didn't want to go an deven threatened divorce. I ended up going and my reluctance to go made my husband's business partner sweeten the pot until I relented.

It ended up being the best 6 years of my life...I still miss it and hope to make on least visit before I die. Since I speak fluent Hungarian it was easy for me.

Anyway, I found a video of Budapest, think it's about 10 years old but the old bldgs are just a little older now.

I'll probably keep adding things here as I remember them or think of something. This is just a start.

Would love to visit there. Prague, as well, my Mother's birthplace.

You know, after I got divorced, and my Mother moved out to Vegas to "take care of the house" while I completed my Degree requirements, we talked about how much she would love to visit her birthplace. She came here at age 5, had never been back, but remembered a lot about it, "Visoki Tatri", and so on. Sadly, it did not happen.

Interestingly, mid-way through my marriage, Sue & I went to Europe in 1972, she had been born in Germany up near the Danish Border, rented a car, and drove throughout Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, and France. Czechoslovakia was not on the list, still "tight-bordered".

Yes, I was in Hungary in about 1974..went with my 3 yr old daughter to meet my in laws and show them their granddaughter. My daughter was petrified and scared to death of my husband's father.

It was still communist and Kind of scary...soldiers everywhere.

I'm watching this thread. I can't wait to see pictures. I'm so glad we have such a wide variety of members here. I was invited to visit Prague when I was in college, but was unable to go, unfortunately. I'd like to go someday, but that's not looking likely, although, after last night, I'm a bit more hopeful about the future for some reason.

You never know @Diane Lane ..you're still young. Actually the countries in Eastern Europe are somewhat cheaper
Also but just as beautiful as other countries in Europe. People are very friendly and loved Americans..at least when I was there.

Yes, and Croatia looks nice, too. I noticed HGTV was covering it quite a bit on the shows that I watched, such as House Hunters International, and another about Island living or renting. I had a classmate from Croatia, she was very nice and the cost of living seemed low, but of course demand will drive that up, and I'm sure HGTV is doing their part to facilitate that.

Yes, Croatia is beautiful, spent a few days there.

My first trip to Europe was in 1969. The year I graduated from high school. Went with my parents and 3 siblings. So you can imagine we had to watch how much we spent. Paris was outrageous and I think we ate french fries that were in rolled up newspaper. :)
A Coke was $6 back then.

On that trip we went to Paris, a few cities in Switzerland and of course Hungary were I met my paternal grandmother for the first time, she was 93!! Also did Portugal which was pretty cheap.

We were there for 6 weeks...read about the moon landing in Paris...some didn't believe it. :)
