I really hope this works out nicely for you and your husband! Once his movie is out, you'll have to let us know so we can watch it!

I didn't know about the tax either, until I googled for some tips, and I found loads and loads of publishing tips! Google can be your best friends at times. :)

Yep! I do love the power of Google and forums like this one. Information is now virtually in the palm of our hands or at our our fingertips. I think this is someones slogan line. I have to admit, I have spent hours researching this whole publication process. What threw me off was the whole formatting ordeal. I kept trying to figure out how to convert from word to the correct type of adobe PDF. Took me weeks to come to the realization that I had adobe reader and I needed adobe 10, or at least I think that was the version required. It was a while back. Finally got this answer from my daughter with the roll of the eyes. Have to admit, the younger generation being raised on computers have a heads up. Still fairly proud that if I have a questions, I will figure it out one way or another. I might be a procrastinator in certain areas, but I am full of determination, as needed.

Side note for anyone thinking about self publishing. I tend to be a bit comma happy in my writing and overuse passive verbs. It is wise to get an editor, as mentioned above by Ruth. Otherwise, check out a legitimate grammar checker site.

I think that you can save a book as PDF through Word. I know that at least from Word 2007 onwards, you have the ability to save a document as .PDF, so that it cannot be edited.

If you're going to write a book to be published as an ebook, I think it would be a good idea to buy software made specifically for that. Scriveners is a good choice, I think, and one that's available for both Windows and a Mac, although I'm sure there are other options. I don't know if it publishes to Kindle, but Apple has its iAuthor software that will produce an eBook for iBooks; I have looked at that one, but haven't played around with it much.

Its always such a shame when you see kids who have all this information so easily accesible, but they only get online to find cheats for their video game. Since I'm so used to having to go the the library if you wanted to learn anything, I take full advantage of it! I have taught myself, (with the help of youtube) knitting, crocheting, morse code, sign language, how to run electric through your house, and a million other things. How can anyone ever get bored these days?

Oh, you go girl! I tend to be a visual learner, thus have YouTube pasted right at the top of my page for easy access. lol Speaking of the library, you are so right. We had to go in to get our information from books or got to the bookstore. Nowadays, we can order a book online or even download them which is such a nice connivance! No boredom here!

Speaking of sign language, we should start a thread on this subject, as I am about to refresh myself in this area.

I bet you won't find anyone under the age of 30 who has any idea what the dewey decimal system. lol Windows XP is marking "dewey" as a spelling error. The internet doesn't know what it is!! lmao!!

I love your idea about the thread on sign language! I don't know anyone else who knows it, so a lot of my questions go unanswered.

Probably only because you didn't capitalize it. Since it is named for a person, Melvil Dewey, the "D" is supposed to be capitalized.

You are right about the DDC no longer popular! I think back to those days of flipping through those little cards trying to find a book. Not fun and a bit intimidating for young children, esp those just learning the alphabet!

I will start a thread on sign language right now. We may be surprised at how many people join in to the conversation.

I was a bit intimidated. All the way up into high school. Thinking back on it, I am so ashamed for this confession... but its been so long I can't remember how it works, smh

No need to be ashamed. I wonder, if this is why, I do not like going to the library, yet I love books. The filing cabinet intimidated me and I disliked assigned topic writing projects. Certain we are not alone with these sentiments!

Actually, I am dyslexic, back then teachers just thought sending me to a speech and language specialist would help me. Maybe this is why publishing a book would be the ultimate accomplishment, thus the importance of help with editing.

From 1st grade, all the way through elementary, I spent Tuesday and Thursday with a speech therapist because I couldn't make the 'th', 'sh', & 'r'. I know how much fun those are. Did they not understand dyslexia?

Funny you remember the days of your speech class. All I recall was sitting in this make shift room, which I am sure was an old janitors closet practicing my r's. In my later years, when I became an adult, I use to help children with the pronunciation of certain sounds and letters. I think, it helped because I could relate to their struggle.

I was not "diagnosed" with dyslexia, until I was a senior in high school. I suppose because I transferred around to various schools over the years. Amazing how knowledge and acceptance changed over the years, along with teaching techniques. Anyways, once I figured out why I was having problems, I went about looking for ways to strengthen my weaknesses.

Probably should have posted this under an education thread, so I will tie it back into publishing a book. I will give a shout out to anyone with dyslexia thinking about publishing a book, go for it! We have come a long way from using typewriters and that awful white out that smudged the paper! lol

You see a lot of little jokes about dyslexia. But I couldn't imagine.

I still have trouble with my "R". i can say 'royal', but I can't say "roy" lol
And I know what you mean by it being a janitor's closet! Our was a small office with no windows. Did you have to wear the thing on your head that allowed you to hear what you sound like. it was like a partial helmet, and one side of it extended down in front of your mouth. I guess the sound waves would follow up to the ears. I have no idea how to describe it so that it'll make sense :p
