As someone who's dealt with AT&T over the years, I don't think this is necessarily a good thing. Back in the day, here in the U.S., we had one provider, one 'telephone company', then the government broke up that monopoly, supposedly so we the consumers would have more choice. Since that break up, obviously a lot of changes have taken place, with technology expanding and now being used for much more than simple home phone connections. As a result of that, bills have also increased, and in many cases, customer service has decreased.

I used to like AT&T, back when their service was reliable and customer service and technical support were helpful and supportive. It seems in many cases the larger a company becomes (not unlike a government), the less responsive it is to the longtime customers. It now seems that the largest companies are looking to regain power status and decrease our choices. This seems to be a power hungry move on the part of AT&T. They swallowed up DirecTV not long ago, and are now looking to take over yet another company in the industry.

Here's an article with detailed information.

Doesn't make me too happy either. Seems they have lots of money after ripping people like me off for years!!

Ha, that was my thought exactly. If it goes through, they'll have even more market share, and the ability to further tighten the stranglehold on those of us without many options for service.

I absolutely hate my Direct TV I got talked into and with a 2 year contract.

That's one good reason to move to my daughter's....I can get out of the contract without having to pay the $20 a month penalty.

Are you sure that you can get out of the contract just by moving, @Chrissy Page ? I thought that you have to pay the disconnect fee regardless of why you cancel your subscription.
Ours is going up at the end of the first year, which will be around April.
Since all of the election foo-foo-raw will (hopefully) be over by then, maybe Bobby wil not be watching Fox News all of the time, and if so, then we can cancel the subscription. I know we still have to pay the fee, but since we have had it for a whole year, the fee should not be as much, and HAS to be better than the monthly charges.
We have that little roof antenna that Bobby put up last spring when we were trying to get away from Comcast, and if we get a Roku or Amazon Fire Box/Stick, then we can at least get most of the other stations that Bobby likes to watch. Maybe one of them will even carry Fox News by then, who knows.

Yes, I can. I asked before I got it. It would be impossible for me to have Direct TV at my daughter's house.

    She has Xfinity.

She would simply not allow a satellite dish on her house. I would have about a year left on the contract, I'd doubt they'd go to court to sue me for $20 a month for a year. I could easily pay it but I wouldn't...it's the principle.

If you move and direct TV is available then you can't cancel but I'm not moving to a place where it's my house.

I won't even be taking any Tvs, there's a way bigger smart TV in my room there.

My parents have Time Warner, and I think my sister might too. I know they both have had issues with them over the years. I hope for the sake of everyone who has them, the transition goes smoothly. I know at one time At&T was found to be in violation of anti trust laws and made to downsize. It looks like they are upsizing again!

I've had a buy order in place for AT&T stock for nearly a year but it has never come down to my price. Probably never will now.

AT&T was on a list of good stocks that pay high dividends that my broker had recommended. Ford Motor Company was on the list too and I bought quite a bit of it.
I've always driven Fords anyway so I might as well own part of the company.o_O

@Chrissy Page Are you definitely moving? I think you'd mentioned it as a possibility, but not that it was definitely going to happen. It does sound as if you're ready for a change, and you don't seem too attached to where you are now. How will that be for Pickles? More playmates there, with the kids around?

I think I saw that it's a done deal. I saw this earlier. It was posted 13 hours ago, and seems to be a done deal, but of course there's always lots of red tape when something of this magnitude happens. It seems they're trying to bypass the regulatory restrictions by calling Time Warner a supplier. Here's the WSJ story.

Pickles would love it. They are his second family because that's where he's always stayed when I would go to my sons for a month or my mom's.

That's good. So, is it a done deal, you're definitely moving there?

I just read the Gettysburg article. I like the idea of the term limits, and also the ban on former White House officials (should be everyone involved in government, in my opinion) working with foreign governments. We need to limit the influence of foreign governments in the U.S., and also look at who is buying property and companies.
