I have a huge list of bad things I have tasted throughout my life, most of them I have to thank my lovely wife for. She makes some fantastic food, but sometimes she fails really hard at cooking. I've already written that she once dropped a lot of ginger in a fruit smoothie, making it insanely hot. She once managed to make some bacon rolls with the bacon turning out to be raw inside. What was the worst thing you have ever eaten or drank? I'd love to hear your stories!
They probably don't count as the worst things I've ever had, but I can remember the grim days back in the late 1970s and early 1980s when many restaurants were of the opinion that those of us who were (and still are) vegetarian would be happy with an omelette and a soggy lettuce leaf. Even better with a slice of aging, tasteless tomato. Yum! Back in a similar era, a lot of beer in the UK was keg rather than cask-conditioned. I loathe keg beer - cold, fizzy and full of chemicals. Hideous stuff. Thankfully, vegetarians and lovers of good beer have a great choice these days. I've had a fair bit of bad wine as well. Luckily, I've had plenty of good wine and to make John Donovan happy (I hope!), I had an absolutely lovely bottle of Romanian wine last weekend. Wine from Romania and Moldova is, from my experience, very good.
Our wines are really good, indeed! Maybe I am just biased, but my whole life I was under the impression that our wine is fantastic and all the others are pale in comparison. However, romanians in rural areas are really serious about their vineyards, mostly because they love their wine too. That's why Romanian wine is so lovely! And yes, I feel really proud whenever someone praises Romanian products.
Liver ranks very high on my list of worst foods, but that list would also include chorizo, blood sausage, and that stuff they make you drink before going into the imaging lab at the hospital. The very worst, however, is lutefisk. That stuff could gag a maggot even while it was being prepared.
I don't remember exactly something that I have ever eaten or drunk, but I have to say that eating rotten food/beverages either by mistake or because I was offered with some inadvertently is probably the worst taste experience I can cite from top of my head.
Pardon me if you love Japanese food. But I can't seem to come to terms in eating raw fish. I have tried it many times but my mouth just wouldn't cooperate. When we were living with my in-laws, my father-in-law would buy fresh tuna and make sashimi at home. He would be eating that with a beer and that would serve as his dinner. He had offered me many times but I always refused because I just can't eat. I wonder why my husband feels the same, he doesn't relish raw food.
I can't say it's the worst I ever ate because some things, such as raw fish, I refuse to eat. I don't like under cooked meat of any kind. Other than that I like most food and like to try new things.
It's quite unusual to see wine from eastern Europe available in the UK. We get a fair amount of Hungarian wine, but we don't see many others. My first experience of Romanian wine was when I went to Bucharest about four years ago. It was very good, as was the Moldovan wine we had there as well. Croatia produces some beautiful wines, too. Another good wine-producing country is Georgia - we had some lovely Georgian wine in Russia last year. Perhaps because these countries export very little, people are not aware of how good they are, but I'm doing my best to spread the word!
Eh, Liver and Chorizo are favorites of mine. I find that, if cooked well, they can be just about the tastiest dishes as far as meat is concerned. However, I understand that tastes differ from person to person. My wife, for example, loves cauliflower while I despise it.
Oh, people are aware of how good the wines they make are. In fact, that's why you don't see many outside our countries! Many people produce wine for their personal consumption, and some are truly addicted. I swear to God we need anonymous alcoholics in every single village.
The worst food for me that I have ever eaten and made to eat when I was little was and is chitterlins, ughhhhhhhhhhh. I don't like the way they look or smell. I gag every time I smell them. The worst drink I ever tasted was and is whiskey. I thought I burned a hole in my throat and stomach. I believe some foods and drinks you just develop an 'acquired' taste for them. They would have to be the last things on earth before that happens to me.
Yes once I had to drink this concoction so I could have my colon checked and it was the worst stuff ever. the item was magnesium Citrate and the recommended the lemon one, which was gawd awful and I ended up having stuff coming out of all my ends. To think they make that stuff in cherry and Grape to. I have started to use Kombacha Tea and I have to say that the taste is not to terrible but it would not be called delicious. Now that I have been drinking this for awhile (the beginning was rough for me) I find that I actually look forward to it in the morning. or more properly that body wants it. I liken it a lot to taking some apple cider vinegar straight up. A bit sour and nothing you want to just savor but it is effective. For anyone not familiar it is a fermented tea that is suppose to help repair the digestive track. One of the things it does is kill Candida and remove some toxins and I have to agree it works. Although initially it can make you sick from the die off. I did not get sick in the classic sense but I did get severe headaches the first few weeks. it has been about two months now and I feel better then I have in a very long time. I am sold that it works. For the four ounces I have to suffer it is worth it.
I grew up in a family of hunters in the UP of Michigan, although I don't hunt, but I love venison (deer meat), and I have had venison here in Maine, and loved that as well. However, while I was in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas I tried venison and, although it was also the meat of a white-tailed deer, I could barely get it down in order to be polite. My friends, from Texas, liked it, but I thought it was awful. I tried it two more times from different people, thinking it was a matter of the way in which it was cooked, but it was still awful. I'm thinking it had to do with what deer in Texas eat as compared to what they eat in Michigan and Maine.
Could be- also could be the difference in the fat in the animal.. I would think that some of the animals farther north have a higher fat content from the cold weather. It changes what they eat as well and the amounts, those warm climate deer do not have the same problem but I bet they have less water content over all. When it comes to deer the way it is butchered and then the way the meat is prepared also make a difference. I find I prefer the ground meat or it as a stew meat as opposed to a steak or a roast- most of the venison roasts I have had just seem to be tough not as good as beef or pork. I guess I am spoiled I like when a roast cooks down soft and flakey.
Liver is one of my favorites. Many people don't like hot and spicy but I do. I made a new batch of Tabasco sauce yesterday.
