    SPELLING ...................
    How do you spell ..... fish ??? ......................... GHOTI ..... spells fish.....

    enough ================== F ...... GH
    women =================== I ....... O
    lotion ==================== SH ... TI

    Therefore GHOTI ....... is another way to spell FISH

    Our spelling is a little strange - the Americans have a better take on it
    Would be a lot easier your way :p

    There are other words that can be spelled that way..
    I was just wondering if anyone knew what that method is called and if you knew anything about it ...

    I too use to do that in my younger years. It made for a lot of fun with my children.

    I take it you already know
    Of tough and cough and dough?
    But what about, hiccough, thorough and through?

    Beware of heard, a dreadful word
    That looks like beard and sounds like bird,

    And dead: it's said like bed, not bead --
    For goodness sake don't call it 'deed'

    Watch out for meat and great and threat...
    They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.

    (meat-suite, great-straight, threat-debt.)

    There isn't a moth in mother,
    Nor both in bother, or broth in brother,

    And here is not in there
    But ear is in dear and fear
    But not in bear and pear;

    And then there's dose and rose
    But lose, goose and choose,

    And cork and work and card and ward,
    And font and front and word and sword,

    And do and go and thwart and cart --
    Come, come, I've hardly made a start!

    A dreadful language? Man alive!
    I'd learned to speak it when I was five!

    But will I write it before I die?
    I hope so, I say with a sigh!

    Frank... Most likely you are right..
    I just mentioned it for fun and I think I created a monster on here..
    It doesn't matter because we are here to have fun and we are doing just that..

    Tuna boat ????? perhaps more likely a Herring Trolley....

    Ahhh, Steve! I was only casting about seeking to find if any others had heard and retained the rather low-life inference of the original joke. Seems as though you may not have. Please remember, I've been "around the block" probably many more times than most others here, and thus have encountered more of the crass and gutter-bound information than most. I shan't do it here, but please see my PM.
    Frank

    P.S. Bet Ken knows the joke??
