When I first saw this statue, I thought it was Captain Picard on the bridge of the Enterprise! How dopey is that?

    Statue Without Limitations
"When Charles-Olivier Roy, principal of Artisans du Passage, took on the job of reproducing an historic bronze statue, he faced two huge challenges: re-creating a work of art nearly eight feet tall and paying proper homage to one of Canada’s finest sculptors, Louis-Philippe Hébert".

"Creating a likeness was not good enough for Roy; he had to produce an exact replica that reflected the full glory of the original piece. Roy met the challenges by turning physical reality into 3D digital reality, which then gave him endless options in the real world".

Scanning of the 7-foot-9-inch statue was done outside the Parliament Building in Quebec City using a Creaform Handyscan 3D scanner. Four layers of primer coating were applied to ensure a smooth finish before pieces were cast in ceramic.

Here on Oahu we have King Kamehameha Statue on South King Street right in the heart of Honolulu. Every year we have King Kamehameha Day with festivities of lovely Hawaiian Food, parade and the draping of leis on the statue of King Kamehameha. The festivities started way back in 1871 to honor the memory of King Kamehameha the Great. The State has two statue of Kind Kamehameha.

The first statue went down in the Falkland Island seas and was retrieve by a British captain who brought it to Hawaii when he saw it being fished out of the Falkland seas in 1882. This statue is on the Big Island at Kohala, King Kamehameha's birthplace where it stands today. When the first statue of the King went down in the Falkland Island seas Hawaii commissioned another statue to be built. The second statue of King Kamehameha is the statue that stands on South King Street at Ali'iolani Hale across of Iolani Palace todays . Thomas A. Gould was the commissioned sculptor to create the statue of King Kamehameha in 1878.

This is the King Kamehameha statue on Oahu.

@Krissttina Isobe - We had a Luau Night, at our church some years back, where I was the DJ on Hawaiian 105 KINE radio. I played records of Hawaiian music, including some old Arthur Godfrey 78's! I also read a story of a little boy, who entered a costume contest, dressed as King Kamehameha, and he won First Prize! I will have to find it for you.

The two statues of King Kamehameha, are beautiful and that is quite a story of how the first statue was rescued from the deep. Thank you!

:)You're welcome. There was a little statue on Kalakaua Ave. years back that now has disappeared. This little statue was a store front statue standing about 4' high and I couldn't find a picture of it. At this site is another statue of King Kamehameha
    This is King Kamehameha I

There is a correction I have to make about my posting. The statue on Kalakaua Ave. is of the Statue of Liberty not King Kamehameha. My apologies for the my mistake. It's a miniature version of the Statue of Liberty that stood on Kalakaua Ave. I was so sure there would be a picture of it because it was so unusual, but the statue was of Liberty not King Kamehameha. The picture was taken in 2014.

Sculpture moved after texters kept bumping into it

(NEWSER) – Walking while texting can be dangerous — a fact that was recently reconfirmed in England.

"A 20-foot-high sculpture of two clasped hands that formed an archway over a path on the grounds of the Salisbury Cathedral in Wiltshire had to be relocated because walkers kept bumping into it (despite the 6 feet, 4 inches of clearance beneath the center of it), the BBC reports".

"In a Facebook post last week that showed "The Kiss" being moved by crane, artist Sophie Ryder wrote the galvanized steel wire sculpture was moved "because people were walking through texting and said they bumped their heads! Oh well!!"

"A cathedral official didn't specify texting as the issue, but said "during the hours of darkness" there were some incidents. The sculpture was installed earlier this month as part of an exhibit on the cathedral lawn, reports the Telegraph; the show runs through July 3".

"Researchers found that while navigating an obstacle course and using a smartphone, "people actually slowed down and engaged in a more protective or cautious walking pattern," says an author of the study. (This man fell to his death while looking at his device".)

Selfie behaviour: Chinese tourist ignores ‘do not touch’ sign for photos on 600-year-old statue
    [IMG]

A Chinese tourist has been criticised for her “uncivilised” behaviour after she took selfies sitting on top of a 600-year-old statue outside a Ming dynasty (1368-1644) tomb, mainland media reports.

Thanks for sharing. I love public art that that can be engaged with, although by that I mean viewing or walking through, not lounging on the back of a statue, or climbing on statues. many people these days just don't have any sense of respect for history or the events that occurred and people who were affected. Two of my favorites are the Boston (or New England) Holocaust Memorial, and Boston's Irish Famine Memorial. Of course I also love the many other historical statues and memorials throughout the area, but these two were down the street from where I worked, and I would walk through or by them on an almost daily basis.

Another one around here that's very popular, particularly with tourists, is the Galveston 1900 Storm Memorial, dedicated in memory to the approximately 6,000 people killed/lost during that unnamed storm.
