Growing up, we had a neighbor who removed his geraniums frrom the ground,before the first frost, and hung them in the attic. He would replant them in the Spring. Has anyone tried Overwintering Geraniums? I would like to save a beauty of a plant, that our daughter got Mary for Mother's day and am not sure of the best way.
Been overwintering mine for years! At first I would put my plants on the north side of my house under the eves (very protected, no wind, etc and, we live in Seattle). I'd then cover with a heavy plastic and they'd all survive. Last year I bought a small green house through Amazon and kept my plants in their pots in there and worked great. I've also got a couple of salvia plants I am able to winter over also. The greenhouse I bought is about $40 and is about 6' long and 3 feet tall. It's longer than tall, but that's what I wanted. I am also able to put it up and take it down as the seasons require. I also multiply my geraniums by just taking a cutting, putting an end in a rooting compound and sticking in dirt and making sure the soil around it stays wet.
Thanks for your ideas, Debbie. Since it is only one plant, I may just replant it in a container and bring it in. It will need loose soil and lots of Sun. On the other hand, I want to keep it simple, and not watch it die a slow death in front of my eyes. Maybe I will try drying it out and replanting it in the Spring. Seems the only thing that I've planted with success, is indecision!
My wife takes her geraniums that are in pots and brings them in the house for the long winter.. They are already in as we have had frost.. We have a shelving unit that she fills up with different pots of plants and she keeps them in the house facing the sliding doors to our upstairs balcony which is also our second bedroom and the computer room.. Waters them as needed.. In the late spring she takes them out to the patio and later on when it is warmer, puts them wherever they go in our gardens.. They are in pots with hooks on top to hang them.. She takes off the hooks when they go into the shelves.. We have about 10 or more geraniums and many other varieties.. Perhaps 30 plants in all.. They are in the house, kept warm, watered, in front of light and some sun from the sliding doors, very healthy, and they actually grow during this season..
Joe, I have read on a gardening board that you can prune a plant near the base and put it under the house. Next spring, take it out, water it and put it back outside. I haven't tried it so I can't guarantee that it will work.
OMG! I don't think that would work. Your poor geranium wouldn't be a geranium anymore. It would be squash!
In the south, our houses have "Crawl spaces" underneath. The water pipes, AC, heat ducts, etc are there. That is what I mean by under the house.
