We talked before about Wal-Mart. Here's some factual stuff.

"More than 200 violent crimes have been committed so far this year at Walmart locations across the US — about one per day."
"Walmart locations have been host to crimes from shoplifting to stabbing, manslaughter, and attempting kidnapping in 2016, report Shannon Pettypiece and David Voreacos at Bloomberg. "

Pardon me for this comment. You can consider me ignorant on the issue because there is no Walmart here as far as I know, only 7-11. Anyway, I have been receiving emails about Walmart usually with pictures of weird people. And although the photos of those Walmart shoppers are strange and some are funny but I find the tenor of the email is a smear on the store. I wonder why there are so many detractors of Walmart who are creating those emails.

And now this thread looks to me like one of those emails, trying to put the blame on the store. I really wonder. Again, pardon me for my ignorance on the issue, I'm just expressing my honest opinion and no offense meant to anyone.

I think the problem is violent miscreants who are looking to victimize people, non-violent thieves looking for a place they can get in and out of readily with a bunch of merchandise. Walmart is huge, and so are the parking lots, which seems to make it a convenient place for them to shop for victims. Rather than blaming Walmart, I'd blame the perpetrators. There have always been variety stores and low budget stores, and I'm personally tired of people griping about Walmart and blaming it seems every problem in society on them. I appreciate having a place to shop that has some of the lowest prices around. They're not always lowest, but they do save me gas from having to run around to a bunch of stores. I don't shop there as much as I used to, because I tend to stick closer to home these days.

We have a Walmarts two miles from where I live. It isn't a super one, but stays open 24/7. The Super Walmart is six miles away. I use this one for many of my needs. The whole store is run efficiently. Within four hours, I had an oil change on the car Tire & Lube, picked up my new glasses at the Vision Center, got my prescriptions at the pharmacy. Did a short grocery order. All under one roof. Clothes, Marshalls is a favorite place for clothes, once a year for me. I ware cut-offs and tank tops most of the time. Not long ago I was called up for jury duty, that put me in panic mode.:)

We do most of our grocery shopping at Walmart. We go to our local Super Walmart every week. We have found things at our Walmart store that were definitely cheaper than in some other stores we know. However, we no longer buy clothes or tennis shoes at Walmart. We don't buy electronics at Walmart either, only at Best Buy. We also buy a few things online that are sold thru Walmart that aren't sold in the store.

Just my thoughts on the OP about Walmart destroying Retailing.
I have found that people are willing to pay a little more if the smaller retailers provide a personal service.

To me, service is very important.

An example would be that the 'Boomer' generation are leaving more traditional jobs and still wish to work.

    What a great, untapped resource.

Staff your small business with people who know how to be polite, helpful, with a proven work ethic.
If not, you will have a hard time surviving against low priced brick and mortar stores or the internet giants.
Sadly, over the years, small retailers went a different direction.

If I am going to be ignored when I shop equally by large and small retailers, the lower priced one is going to win out.

Big box stores including the one I work for would rather take on the loss of shoplifters than risk the possibility of a law suite. Our store does not like police contact and tell us all the time not to impede the shoplifters exit. Just ask for a receipt and back off if they refuse to halt.

I use to worked at one store in Naples, Florida 8 years on night shift in receiving/stocking, but open 24/7. We were told the same thing and our store is next door to the police station/courthouse.

The "end cap" right around the corner from the Produce Department in our Wal-Mart is a huge freezer with doors on it. Filled with bags of frozen fish of nearly every kind imaginable. Every single one is marked "Product of China" in tiny lettering at the bottom, on the back. I hear that's where the pond-raised fish are fed highly nutritious diets of chicken droppings.

    Do you buy that there?

I would prefer to shop at Harp's even though prices may be higher. The quality of their meat and produce is much better. The problem is every time I go shopping there are non grocery items on the list I can't get at Harp's so I end up buying everything at Walmart.

Are you satisfied with Walmart's vision center? My step dad wants new prescription reading glasses and I told him not to go to my eye doctor. They are too expensive. I have a complex prescription so I need to go to a place like that.

Regarding jury duty, ask your MD to write you a permanent excuse from jury duty. I asked mine to and he just wrote it out on a prescription pad. I didn't think that would be good enough so I called the county and asked. The woman was very nice stating that was enough as long as it stated temporary or permanent (which I got) She said they are not entitled to details and sometimes receive letters with much more information than they need. I made a copy of it, sent in the original and had a letter back about a week later stating it was accepted. No more calls to jury duty.

They are now building a super Walmart in a town in my county. They fought the expansion in this town for years so it's now going in about 1/2 hour away. The same town my cats came from. It is supposed to open before the holiday rush. I'll probably check it out when I get my taxes done in that town next year. It's the only time I go there. I used to live in that town and don't want to change tax preparers.

I only go to Walmart a few times a year for things I need that are cheaper there. I go with a list and get out. I do think Walmart has destroyed small business. Especially when they go into smaller more rural towns. I'm not a fan of the store. I go there only to save money.

@Kitty Carmel......Hi, I've gone to the same optometrist for 6 years, at Wal-Mart. Even though he can't diagnose diseases of the eyes like an ophthalmologist, he found a black fleck on the retina of my left eye. And I had choices what retina specialist to go to, just references. He also lined me up with a very good ophthalmologist. Come to find out I have a melanoma tumor on the retina. It's checked every year. to see if it grew. The ophthalmologist checks my eyes for new prescription. For having my eyes checked for reading glasses the optometrist at Wal-Mart. I still see my optometrist, as a friend, and he has the time to chat. He also told me my eye pressure test was high. That was a few yrs. ago. And asked if I had glaucoma. I told him a doctor years ago told me I did. I didn't believe it. He said, it's just slightly elevated. Saying will try the test again tomorrow, but don't drink any coffee before the test. Did all that and pressure was where it should be.:)

Yes Wal-Mart has put a dent into small businesses, but they have to learn to specialize in certain things they carry. Sell on the Internet, make a web page. Anything I buy for the grandkids I buy on line. I like Amazon the best, have them gift wrap the gifts and have it sent right to them. I make sure it's addressed just for them with their names on it. They always feel so special which they are. My boys acted the same way when little.:)

If you go there not at all, you will save even more.........Imagine the stupidity of today's advertising stating, "Save 50%!" How is ANYTHING saved at all, if money is spent? SAVE 100% happens if you do not buy, regardless of price.
