Do any of you remember the Pee-Wee Harris series? Although they were published well before my time, in the 1920s, we had the series in our library at home, and I read them all. In the early 1900s, there were several Boy Scout oriented book series being published, and widely popular among boys in their day. If you haven’t read them, think Hardy Boys, but with a Boy Scout theme.

My daughter was big on the Nancy Drew series when she was younger. She still has the books in a trunk and refuses to get rid of them, she is 46 now. Her daughter likes to read but these books are not the type of stories she like.

I was born in 1951 and these books were published in the 1920s, but I liked them, and still do. In fact, over the past month, I have read dozens of old kid's books based on Boy Scouting. I consider it research for a book that I'll probably never write.

I was going to say that the Hardy Boys were published long after the Pee-Wee Harris series, since new ones were still being published when I was a boy, but I see that the Hardy Boys series began in 1927 and continued to be published until 1979. The first of the Pee-Wee Harris series was 1922, but it ended in 1930, becoming a comic strip in Boys Life the BSA publication) in the 1950s, where it is still published.

I never heard of them either. I read pocket book westerns and pirate stories and stories cast in the deep south and the Far North of Canada and Alaska, but no series books.

We might have a copy or two in our heavily booked shelves of the classics. :) It was a wonderful pleasure hunting for old books. We have had favorite authors as we learned about them. GA Henty's historical fiction novels were a great learning history. The adventure for our children was life-like in all events. Most stories, they said are gruesome-- lots of killing in the wars.
